This half-day workshop presented by Heather Hedden instructs participants on how to create back-of-the-book style A-Z indexes on web sites or intranets. The presentation content, examples, and exercises come from the full 13-week series online courses that have been offered by Hedden Information Management since 2005. Prior experience in HTML or in indexing is not required but is an advantage. Indexing techniques and tools specific to web site indexing will be presented.

1. Introduction and types of web site indexes
2. HTML tags used for index entry linking and subentry indentation
3. Indexing software overview: book indexing software, conversion utilities (HTML/Prep)
4. XRefHT web site indexing tool
5. HTML Indexer web site indexing tool
6: Index formatting and style
7. Indexing techniques: what to index, wording of entries, cross-references, etc.
8. Web index market, marketing, and index maintenance
9. Related topics of taxonomies, database indexes, and meta data indexing
This workshop is endorsed by the Web Indexing Special Interest Group of the American Society of Indexers.
Cost: $135, plus either the conference registration fee or $100 workshop-day only fee (can also be applied to afternoon workshop).
