over, designers are busy with day-to-day projects and business as usual tha
t they can’t find time to work on bigger issues, the mythical strategic des
 ign.
\n
\nFortunately, strategic design isn’t a type of work: it’s a way yo
 u work.
\n
\nWe can adjust our tools and techniques to become more relevant
and offer more value to our organizations. By changing how we approach spe
cific tasks, we can transform lessons from small projects into frameworks t
 hat guide entire systems.
\n
\nThis presentation will discuss six experienc
es, collected from experience collected at global IT companies, universitie
s, political campaigns, interactive agencies, and financial institutions th
at shows how common design deliverables can be used to influence – and chan
 ge – the broader organization.
\n
\nThough the examples and strategies are
useful for practitioners of any skill level in any discipline, newer and in
termediate information architects, interaction designers, and user experien
ce designers will learn the most. Those interested in design strategy, inf
ormation architecture, or user experience management will find the presenta
 tion especially useful.
\n
\nAbout the Presenter: Austin Govella works as a
Senior Information Architect with Comcast Interactive Media. In his off-ti
me, Austin works as a development editor for Boxes and Arrows (http://www.b
oxesandarrows.com), the web’s premier user experience and design publicatio
 n.
\n
\nHe writes about IA, design, and business on his blog, Thinking and
 Making (http://thinkingandmaking.com).
