SUMMARY:Usability expert review training
LOCATION:London, United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:For people in design teams who need rapid methods for assessing
usability, "How to carry out an expert review" is a 1-day usability traini
ng course that will show you how to spot usability problems in prototypes a
nd finished products. Unlike courses in usability testing, this course teac
hes you how to find and fix usability problems without involving end users.

\n
\nAfter attending this course, you will be able to carry out a range of
usability inspection methods, such as Nielsen's heuristic evaluation and a
cognitive walkthrough. As well as a set of comprehensive notes, you will l
eave the seminar with detailed usability checklists, workbooks and step-by-
step instructions to help you carry out the most valuable techniques.
\n
\n
 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
\n
\n-Appreciate the difference between a usability inspe
 ction and someone’s personal opinion.
\n-Learn and practice some quick tech
niques for carrying out usability reviews of prototypes and finished produc
 ts.
\n-Find and fix usability bloopers before they become hard coded.
\n-Ap
ply Jakob Nielsen’s “heuristic evaluation” technique to software, products
 and web sites.
\n-Uncover the elements of your design that lead new users t
o make errors, using the task-based "cognitive walkthrough" method.
\n-Lear
n to spot usability problems in prototypes and finished products.
\n

SUMMARY:Call for Speakers "Expert Forum Infoconnectivity"
LOCATION:Vienna, Austria
DESCRIPTION:The International Institute for Information Design (IIID) in Vi
enna is organizing a top-notch event this year in connection with public tr
ansportation. The Expert Forum “Infoconnectivity - Intertwined information
for interconnected transport networks“. will focus on the effectiveness of
public transport and the time it takes to change between different modes of
transport. The quicker and the more efficient, the better for passengers,
tourists or staff, in short: for everyone. Down-time should be reduced to a
n absolute minimum. However, if this so-called “inter-connectivity” between
transport networks is to be enhanced, it is vital to focus on measures of
improving information-connectivity (infoconnectivity) between service provi
ders in the area of public transport.
\n
\nIIID is still looking for speake
rs who are willing, competent and eager to speak at this international desi
 gn event.
\n
\nFor details on the event (4/5 September 2008) and our "Call

SUMMARY:USID2008: Design Innovation & User Experience
LOCATION:Bangalore, India
DESCRIPTION:Advances in communication and information technology have evolv
ed users from ‘informed buyers' to ‘sophisticated consumers', and these sop
histicated consumers expect more from the products and services they buy.
\
 n
\nWhile ‘gathering requirements to fulfill needs of the users' were suffi
cient for the informed buyer, it remains largely inadequate when attempting
to address the needs of this ‘sophisticated consumer'. A striking example
of this stark reality is that corporations are struggling to stay ahead in
the marketplace by ensuring that their online mechanisms leverage the onsla
ught of social communities, information networks, and technology to communi
 cate with their users.
\n
\nBusinesses are faced with a unprecedented dilem
ma: Knowledge of ‘How to make..?” has outpaced the, imagination of ‘What to
make…?” As the technology grows rapidly to deliver the function of the pro
duct, the potential to equally deliver the user experience for the product
remains a challenge. Acknowledging, and addressing the wide gap between tec
hnology, innovation and user experience is crucial to transforming business
 es in the new economy.
\n
\nSatisfying this new generation of sophisticated
consumers, their unexpressed expectations and their expressed needs poses
a multitude of challenges and opportunities that demand a fundamental shift
in the way we approach business. This paradigm shift requires organization
s to build strategies that map their businesses and user goals by deliverin
 g a successful user-experience.
\n
\nDesign Innovation & User Experience ar
e the key drivers in the new economy that will build the identity and the d
istinctiveness required for businesses to stand out in the global marketpla
ce. Innovation with focus on user experience can help businesses differenti
ate in the global marketplace that has no dearth of competitors vying to ma
 ke their mark.

SUMMARY:Delivering Innovative Intranets
LOCATION:Copenhagen, Denmark
DESCRIPTION:Intranets must succeed. While they have grown greatly over the
last ten years, many sites are still struggling to gain the resources they
 need.
\n
\nTo be effective, intranets need to innovate, to find new ways o
 f meeting organisational needs.
\n
\nIntranets must become valuable busines
s tools that deliver tangible and visible benefits for the organisations th
 ey serve.
\n
\nThere must also be a balance between the four fundamental p
 urposes of corporate intranets:
\n
\n• content
\n• communication
\n• collab
 oration
\n• activity
\n
\nThis workshop provides practical approaches for m
anaging and growing intranets. Drawing on the experiences gained across man
y different organisations, hands-on techniques will be provided, along with
  many ideas and approaches.
\n
\nCentral to the workshop is the new ‘6x2 m
ethodology', which offers a rigorous framework for intranet planning. This
unique approach focuses on carefully scoping the next six months of work, t
o ensure that what is planned is not just achievable, but is also worth doi
 ng.
\n
\nTaking this step-by-step approaches provides a strong basis for po
sitioning the intranet as a ‘business tool', one that delivers tangible and
visible benefits to both staff and the organisation as a whole.
\n
\nExamp
les will also be used from the winning entries of the global Intranet Innov
ation Awards, held in 2007 and 2008.
\n
\nDon't miss this chance to hear on
e of the world's foremost authorities on intranets share his insights into
 making intranets work.
\n

SUMMARY:UIE Virtual Seminar: Critique
LOCATION:Virtual
DESCRIPTION:The best critiques not only deliver value to the original desig
ner, but to everyone involved, because it raises the discourse to the under
lying fundamentals and goals, not just the specifics of color and font size
. Learning to critique well is like many other skills: the more you practic
 e, the better you get.
\n
\nYou'll know you've delivered a great critique w
 hen:
\n
\n * The designer is receptive and engaged in the discussion, in
stead of being defensive and argumentative
\n * The designer becomes int
rospective and talks about how they want to revisit some of the underlying
 precepts of the design
\n * Other team members use the critique to look
 at other on-going work
\n
\nIn this UIE Virtual Seminar, you'll get a chanc
e to test out your critique skills. We're soliciting four web sites from me
mbers of our audience. We'll ask them some important information about thei
r designs and then, a week before the seminar, pass that on to you. You'll
have an opportunity to look at each site and develop your critique points.
In the seminar, you'll compare your findings against our critique and other
  attendees.
\n
\nWe're going to focus this session on Site Navigation. We'
ll look at some interesting solutions and talk about what the designers hav
e done well and where we might expect their users to run into issues. We'll
see how these designs tackle some of the big challenges that many designer
s face when building large, complex web sites. We'll even look at other sit
es that have possibly solved the problems in other ways.
\n
\nJoin us for t
his fun, interactive session where you and your colleagues will get a chanc
e to test your skills and learn new techniques for providing insightful, co
 nstructive feedback.
\n
\nRegister with Promotional Code "BOX21" to receive
our lowest price of just $99.
\n
\n
