Meeting Summary:
This is the first ever joint PHICHI & AIGA meeting! As user experience professionals, we always need to interface and collaborate with graphic artists and designers. At times, we all know that this can be difficult. There is a lot that both professions can learn from each other in order to work better together. This is why PHICHI has decided to hold a joint meeting with the local chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).

We’ll take a closer look at Avenue A | Razorfish and GSI Commerce. For this first joint meeting, we decided to give members of both organizations a closer look at the User-Centered Design process of two local agencies, Avenue A | Razorfish and GSI Commerce. Each company will explain their design process from start to finish and show sample deliverables of their work. You will get to see how their design and user experience teams work together.

Registration is free! Please register for this meeting at: http://philadelphia.aiga.org/event_registration-reg.html

Presentation: 6:30pm – 8ish

Where: UPenn Campus - exact room TBD

Summary:
Come and get a behind the scenes look into the actual process used to solve design problems behind the creation of...

~QVC Active - Mike Madaio, Chief Internet Architect, QVC.com
The first US real-time two-way interactive TV shopping service. Viewers use their remote control to make purchases in a real-time environment, just as the product is being showcased on TV.

~Russound UNO-TSV Smart Color Touchscreen - Kyle Pero, Founding Principal, Usable Interface
A touchscreen device that controls a multiroom entertainment system, lighting and climate control. Users can easily decide what music they’d like to play and what mood they want to set in different rooms in their home.

~In-Stadium seat-based ECommerce Platform - Bill Bulman, Partner, MessageFirst
A kiosk-based Rich Internet Application that allows sports fans to purchase concessions and merchandise from their seats. Fans feel closer to their team, while the team learns important consumer data from their fans.

Each of these products are very different, but some of the same user-centered design methods were used in their creation (i.e. contextual inquiries, paper prototyping, user testing, etc). Attendees will learn which methods were used, as well as, why and how they were implemented. Research findings, insights, and lessons learned will all be shared.

What's a "design slam"?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

What's in it for me?
This is a chance for interested IAs, designers, usability practitioners, developers and marketing professionals to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety "lecture-and-Powerpoint" presentation.

Those that want to participate need to be at the meeting by 6:15pm at the latest. The client team will be introducing the design challenge promptly at 6:25.

If you do not want to participate due to not being able to get to the meeting on-time or a severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

Interest in content user-assigned tags is one of the big new stories on the Web. But content tagging is not a new story. What's new about Web 2.0 is that end users are doing the tagging instead of librarians, and the results are being shown almost instantly on websites like flickr, del.icio.us, Wikipedia, and Technorati.Librarians have long contended that end users cannot usefully tag content because they are not trained in how to do indexing. More correctly, end users cannot tag content the way librarians tag content. But this begs the question about what kind of tagging is useful.

Joseph will discuss the usefulness to be found in tagging as it relates to librarians and usability professionals, the Semantic Web, and document and content management practices.

Joseph Busch is the Founder and a Principal of Taxonomy Strategies. Joseph is an authority in the field of information science, a past President of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and an appointee to the Board of Directors of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. He is a frequent speaker on metadata, taxonomy, indexing, classification research, information retrieval, and content management. Read more about Joseph at Taxonomy Strategies. </full-description>

<full-description>This workshop is geared towards a broad audience including government employees, product managers, business strategists, CTOs, CIOs, marketing specialists, communication experts, technology experts and human-computer interaction specialists, but especially those who are web designers.

In the first half of the day Peter Merholz and Maggie Fox address the topic of Web 2.0 as a social media. They will cover the business rational for Web 2.0 development and provide motivation for development in this area. Many case studies will be reviewed.

In the second half of the day Mike Atyeo addresses more detailed issues such as designing and testing Web 2.0 applications, particularly highly interactive AJAX applications. The important issue of accessibility will be addressed by Derek Featherstone, an expert in this particular field.

The more structured part of the workshop will finish with a panel of our presenters. This will be an opportunity for participants to ask any final questions and for presenters to deliver key take-home messages.

Following the panel session, attendees who are interested will then participate in an informal "unconference". This will be an opportunity for attendees to talk some more with the presenters and with each other and unwind. The aim is for all attendees to leave the day with a clearer idea of how social media can benefit their organizations and to know how to make their great ideas become a reality.</full-description>

Most folks know that taxonomy has something to do with organizing things.

Fewer folks know, however, that taxonomy is the practice of classification, which originally began as a science devoted to the classification of living organisms. And that over time, taxonomy has become known as the classification of just about anything and everything.

Even fewer get down into the weeds and do the work that goes beyond simple classification that makes today’s information systems work: meta data, facets, controlled vocabulary, thesauri, synonym maps, ontologies, tagging…

What’s troubling about this divide between those that know about taxonomy and those that don’t is the very importance of taxonomy. For lots of designers & developers, the applications, websites, and interactive products they spend their waking hours creating could not function without well-structured, carefully crafted information structures.

This month’s PhillyCHI meeting will explore in practical and tangible terms the specific ways taxonomy is important to the work we do. We will discuss the design, implementation, and governance of taxonomies by examining four real-world case studies:

    * a user-centric catalog for a large e-commerce site and its impact on the user experience
    * a content-heavy non-profit information site
    * a system processing data through controlled vocabularies and thesauri
    * a consumer-driven search engine

Plenty of time will be reserved at the end of the meeting for discussion, so bring your tough questions!

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

In this presentation, Dennis will share some of his adventures using anthropological tools to inform Information Architecture including some fascinating insights uncovered from raiding people's glove boxes, which directly drove the experience design of the Ford vehicles owners' website. The presentation will help attendees begin to look at Web Design through an anthropological lens, shedding new light on old design problems.

Dennis will also discuss some of the cutting edge ideas and methodologies recently presented at the EPIC2007, the premier international event for practitioners of ethnographic work in industry (not academic). In addition, he will speculate as to what might be some near-term trends we all should take note of.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Mr. Schleicher is a Senior Information Architect at E.magination.com in Baltimore Maryland. He has a background in business and industrial anthropology and has been working awhile in the field of information technology and culture. He later moved into Information Architecture and found, to his surprise, that many anthropological tools and skills were very useful to IA and Web design.

THE DISCUSSION
As design professionals, we strive to create great products and great experiences, both physical and virtual, for the general public or niche markets. But many times -- the cynic would say most of the time -- we miss the mark. The world is full of things that are difficult and frustrating to use. And that's because designers make assumptions about how users think and do things.

Great design is user-centric design.

User-centered design (UCD) is an approach that places the user at the center of the design process from the beginning. By understanding real people's needs and behaviors during the conception and refinement of a design, we can ensure that a new product succeeds.

This discussion will include perspectives on user-centered design from professionals who create experiences in the fields of architecture, interactive design, and product design. Each panelist will present examples and strategies relevant to practitioners of user-centric design in any discipline.

Those interested in architecture, graphic design, human factors, information architecture, interaction design, product design, usability, and user experience will find the discussion highly informative and challenging.

THE PANELISTS
Steve Cleff, Account Planner, Avenue A | Razorfish Philadelphia

Zoey Juhng, Design Director, Bressler Group

Michael Summers, Senior Director, Usability, gsi interactive

Maria Keares Wyant, RA, Wyant Architecture

THE MODERATOR
Dave Cooksey, PhillyCHI Chair
