This advanced information architecture seminar combines lecture, demonstration and exercises, discussion, and handouts to address a topic that bewilders every large organization: designing unified information architectures for large enterprises. You'll learn to:
* Develop main pages and other upper-level "portal" components that convey a single cohesive organization, not a collection of warring business units.
* Use metadata and contextual navigation to help users move from one content-rich page to another, regardless of which business unit manages that content.
* Design search interfaces for improved access to content stored in organizational "silos".
* Better implement an enterprise-wide information architecture through appropriate research and design methods and improved governance.

Seminar Schedule and Outline

Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8am. The seminar starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm, followed by an extremely happy hour. During the day, we'll cover these topics:
* Overview of enterprise information architecture (EIA)
* EIA from the top-down: taxonomies, guides, and other techniques for unifying departmental content
* EIA from the bottom-up: content models and metadata to enable contextual navigation from page to page
* EIA and search: indexing cross-departmental content, presenting results consistently
* EIA and the organization: models for rolling out an enterprise information architecture, staffing it, and paying for and managing it in a distributed corporate environment

What's Included

* Handouts including presentation slides and references to related readings, software products, and other useful resources.
* A variety of opportunities to network with attendees, including a post-seminar happy hour with Lou Rosenfeld, Steve Krug, and other members of the local information architecture and usability communities. In these new fields, knowing your peers is invaluable.</full-description>

<full-description>The 2006 Euro IA Summit theme is ’Building Our Practice’ After the success of last year’s Euro IA Summit, it was obvious we had to organise another one this year. This year we want to look at what it takes to be an IA in Europe. What are the things that we have in common? What are the specifc issues we have to deal with in our country or our business? How can we extend and build the practice of IA in Europe?

*Why do we need a European Summit?*

For starters, if you live over here, it’s a lot easier to get to Berlin than the U.S. or Canada. Second, when we deal with multi-language applications, we really mean it - there are over 20 national languages within the EU alone. Third, we are doing amazing things with alternative interfaces - phones and pocket computers, for example. Most important of all, we are European, not North American - and we see the world a little differently.</full-description>

Summary:
Come and get a behind the scenes look into the actual process used to solve design problems behind the creation of...

~QVC Active - Mike Madaio, Chief Internet Architect, QVC.com
The first US real-time two-way interactive TV shopping service. Viewers use their remote control to make purchases in a real-time environment, just as the product is being showcased on TV.

~Russound UNO-TSV Smart Color Touchscreen - Kyle Pero, Founding Principal, Usable Interface
A touchscreen device that controls a multiroom entertainment system, lighting and climate control. Users can easily decide what music they’d like to play and what mood they want to set in different rooms in their home.

~In-Stadium seat-based ECommerce Platform - Bill Bulman, Partner, MessageFirst
A kiosk-based Rich Internet Application that allows sports fans to purchase concessions and merchandise from their seats. Fans feel closer to their team, while the team learns important consumer data from their fans.

Each of these products are very different, but some of the same user-centered design methods were used in their creation (i.e. contextual inquiries, paper prototyping, user testing, etc). Attendees will learn which methods were used, as well as, why and how they were implemented. Research findings, insights, and lessons learned will all be shared.

<full-description>Design problems are increasingly becoming information problems.

Throughout their days, people are engaging with complex information to manage their lives.

And designers now realize that information isn't simply this stuff you find -- the appropriate presentation of information helps people make sense of the world around them.

This conference addresses issues of design for an always-on, always-connected world. Where "cyberspace" is a meaningless term because the online and offline worlds cannot be made distinct. Where physical spaces are so complex that detailed wayfinding is necessary to navigate them. Where work processes have become so involved, and so digitized, that we need new processes to manage those processes.

This conference brings together people who are addressing these challenges head on. Speakers from a variety of backgrounds will discuss designing complex information spaces in the physical and virtual worlds. program.

What's a "design slam"?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

What's in it for me?
This is a chance for interested IAs, designers, usability practitioners, developers and marketing professionals to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety "lecture-and-Powerpoint" presentation.

Those that want to participate need to be at the meeting by 6:15pm at the latest. The client team will be introducing the design challenge promptly at 6:25.

If you do not want to participate due to not being able to get to the meeting on-time or a severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

This idea is shamelessly stolen (with permission) from the IA Summit's IA Slam. For more information about the IA Slam, visit http://www.e-reiss.com/Seminars.aspx.</full-description>

Interest in content user-assigned tags is one of the big new stories on the Web. But content tagging is not a new story. What's new about Web 2.0 is that end users are doing the tagging instead of librarians, and the results are being shown almost instantly on websites like flickr, del.icio.us, Wikipedia, and Technorati.Librarians have long contended that end users cannot usefully tag content because they are not trained in how to do indexing. More correctly, end users cannot tag content the way librarians tag content. But this begs the question about what kind of tagging is useful.

Joseph will discuss the usefulness to be found in tagging as it relates to librarians and usability professionals, the Semantic Web, and document and content management practices.

Joseph Busch is the Founder and a Principal of Taxonomy Strategies. Joseph is an authority in the field of information science, a past President of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and an appointee to the Board of Directors of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. He is a frequent speaker on metadata, taxonomy, indexing, classification research, information retrieval, and content management. Read more about Joseph at Taxonomy Strategies. </full-description>

* Enterprise information architecture (EIA) from the bottom-up: content models and metadata to enable contextual navigation from page to page
* EIA and search: indexing cross-departmental content, presenting results consistently
* EIA and the organization: models for rolling out an enterprise information architecture, staffing it, and paying for and managing it in a distributed corporate environment

What's Included

* Handouts including over 260 presentation slides and references to related readings, software products, and other useful resources.
* A variety of opportunities to network with attendees, including a post-seminar happy hour with Lou Rosenfeld, Steve Krug, and other members of the local information architecture and usability communities. In these new fields, knowing your peers is invaluable.</full-description>

About the Presentation: The world over, designers are busy with day-to-day projects and business as usual that they can’t find time to work on bigger issues, the mythical strategic design.

Fortunately, strategic design isn’t a type of work: it’s a way you work.

We can adjust our tools and techniques to become more relevant and offer more value to our organizations. By changing how we approach specific tasks, we can transform lessons from small projects into frameworks that guide entire systems.

This presentation will discuss six experiences, collected from experience collected at global IT companies, universities, political campaigns, interactive agencies, and financial institutions that shows how common design deliverables can be used to influence – and change – the broader organization.

Though the examples and strategies are useful for practitioners of any skill level in any discipline, newer and intermediate information architects, interaction designers, and user experience designers will learn the most. Those interested in design strategy, information architecture, or user experience management will find the presentation especially useful.

About the Presenter: Austin Govella works as a Senior Information Architect with Comcast Interactive Media. In his off-time, Austin works as a development editor for Boxes and Arrows (http://www.boxesandarrows.com), the web’s premier user experience and design publication.

He writes about IA, design, and business on his blog, Thinking and Making (http://thinkingandmaking.com).</full-description>

IxDA San Francisco arrives with its first public talk in the city. For the first event in our design tools series we present Kevin Cheng from Yahoo! Brickhouse and OK/Cancel (ok-cancel.com).

Often, wireframes, requirements, personas and other documents have yielded unsatisfactory results – that is, when they are read at all. At Yahoo!, Kevin Cheng has been experimenting with using comics as a technique for communicating the core concepts behind a design’s intended user experience.

In this presentation, Kevin will share how this technique has worked well to get teams informed and on the same page, without fixating on interface details too early in the project. He’ll demonstrate an in-depth walkthrough of his process and the advantages he’s found using comics over other methods. Best of all, you won’t even need to take an art class to use this methodology.

Most folks know that taxonomy has something to do with organizing things.

Fewer folks know, however, that taxonomy is the practice of classification, which originally began as a science devoted to the classification of living organisms. And that over time, taxonomy has become known as the classification of just about anything and everything.

Even fewer get down into the weeds and do the work that goes beyond simple classification that makes today’s information systems work: meta data, facets, controlled vocabulary, thesauri, synonym maps, ontologies, tagging…

What’s troubling about this divide between those that know about taxonomy and those that don’t is the very importance of taxonomy. For lots of designers & developers, the applications, websites, and interactive products they spend their waking hours creating could not function without well-structured, carefully crafted information structures.

This month’s PhillyCHI meeting will explore in practical and tangible terms the specific ways taxonomy is important to the work we do. We will discuss the design, implementation, and governance of taxonomies by examining four real-world case studies:

    * a user-centric catalog for a large e-commerce site and its impact on the user experience
    * a content-heavy non-profit information site
    * a system processing data through controlled vocabularies and thesauri
    * a consumer-driven search engine

Plenty of time will be reserved at the end of the meeting for discussion, so bring your tough questions!

    <full-description>Benefits

<full-description>As we venture beyond Web 2.0 and the undisciplined, unbalanced quest for sexy Ajaxian interaction at the expense of usability, findability, and accessibility, how do we reconcile the timeless principles of design and organization with new transmedia models of interaction, co-creation, tagging, and user participation?

In this advanced seminar, Peter Morville draws upon stories, examples, case studies, and discussions to explore the future present of information architecture and user experience.

Topics include:

* Integrating product development, information architecture, and interaction design to create good experiences and sustainable value (real Web 2.0 case studies that take the discussion beyond de.licio.us and Flickr platitudes).

* Designing next-generation enterprise search systems that combine best practices in taxonomies and tagging with search analytics, guided navigation, thesauri, clustering algorithms, and rich result interfaces.

* Evaluating the multi-channel challenges and real-world opportunities presented by ambient findability and the emerging Internet of objects.

    <full-description>Benefits

Poster Session/Holiday Social:
This isn’t a typical conference poster session. You don’t need to get elaborate; just have fun and get creative! Bring your poster on an 11x17 piece of paper and we will mount it for display. You can print a screen shot of something you worked on, perhaps a before-and-after. Or you can draw up an idea or a unique process that you use in your work. Again, we are not looking for elaborate polished posters, just something simple to demonstrate an idea. All posters will be on display throughout the night while everyone has the opportunity to meet and network with other local UX professionals. If interested, each poster author will be given the floor for a couple of minutes to explain their poster. If you prefer not to participate by bringing a poster, you’re definitely welcome to participate as an audience member and participate in the socializing and networking.

This will be an intimate gathering that offers everybody the chance to present fresh and creative work, ideas or concepts in an informal and fun setting. We invite everyone to come out and share your expertise and get inspired by your colleagues.

Everyone who attends will gain entry into a raffle for a door prize that you won’t want to miss! People who bring posters will be given three raffle tickets, so be sure to bring a poster to have triple the chance of winning.

Note: This is the NH UX version of Pecha Kucha, originally created by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo. Learn more about Pecha Kucha.

You must RSVP to attend, as we need a head count for the venue. Send RSVPs to newhampshire.ux@gmail.com. You will receive an email confirmation once your name has been added to the list of attendees.

Topic:

What Makes a Design Seem Intuitive?

Everyone wants an "intuitive" interface: the users, the designers, and the content publishers. But building them is hard. User Interface Engineering's recent research has given insight into why it's hard and how to get past major obstacles.

To build an "intuitive" interface, a designer has to do two things: (1) Take complete advantage of what the user already knows, so what they see is completely familiar to them and (2) make the act of learning anything new completely imperceptible to the user. It turns out, if the interface requires the user to realize they are learning something, the "intuitive" label disappears instantly.

In this talk, Jared will show:
+ How users need both tool knowledge and domain knowledge to complete their tasks
+ How simple problems with designs can cause big problems for users
+ What successful teams are doing to create experiences that delight

Jared will show examples from Microsoft Word, MSN, Google Talk, Flickr, Avis, and many more.

<full-description>The IA Summit is the premier gathering place for those interested in information architecture. The 2007 Summit attracted over 570 attendees with varying degrees of IA experience and from many related fields. Attendees of the summit are passionate about information architecture and user experience and many are actively involved in the community and the summit itself – over 230 of the attendees provided feedback about the event with 93% indicating that they would attend the summit again and 95% indicating they would recommend the summit to a colleague.

The 2008 theme of “Experiencing Information” shifts the focus back to users. A user experience exists only to allow people to “do things” (in the broadest sense ... buying books, sharing photos with friends, looking something up on wikipedia, etc).

What dimensions of information do users typically experience while “doing things”, and how can we design information environments that best support these users and activities? Such dimensions might include:

- Information quantity and the experience of choice (e.g. Barry Schwartz – The Paradox of Choice);
- The timing of information encounters and information use (e.g. Jared Spool – “seducible moments”);
- The subconscious consumption of information (e.g. BJ Fogg – Persuasive Technology);
- Rapid or intuitive processing of information (e.g. Malcolm Gladwell – Blink);
- The social and participatory aspects of information and information communities (e.g. David Weinberger’s work);
- The wide range of information media: the Web, virtual worlds, ubiquitous computing, mobile technology, physical spaces (e.g. Joshua Prince-Ramus’ and Michael Bierut’s work)

<full-description>This Executive session is for senior managers and executives who have to translate strategic plans and visions into coordinated actions by other people. It is for those of you who want to:

- Take your vision and manage your website to realize your strategic objectives
- Make decisions based on data rather than opinion
- Establish a clear return on investment
- Maintain a clear focus to get maximum impact from limited resources
- Develop actionable metrics for effectively managing the web channel

The key challenge you face today with your website is not about technology or content. It’s about service. How do you let your customers (citizens, consumers and businesses) more quickly and more easily serve themselves? Because on the Web it’s all about self-service.

The Web is about the shift in power from the organization to the customer. Simply put, the Web empowers customers and citizens more than it empowers organizations. The most successful websites are built around the needs of its users, rather than the demands of organizations and managers. In the long-term, being customer-centric is not a like-to-do, it is a must-do.

Gerry McGovern is world-renowned speaker and expert on Web content and usability. He communicates the essential strategies that every manager needs to know, in an engaging and humorous way that makes his message unforgettable. Do not miss this one-off opportunity

<full-description>Information architecture (IA) involves structuring, organising, navigating, labelling and indexing information on intranets and websites to assist organisations in achieving their information needs. It is used to decide how a site should be structured, what kind of content it should host, and how to accommodate its future growth. IA is the foundation of good website or intranet design as it ensures the site will meet business and user needs and defines the backbone of an information system.

However, many organisation’s websites and intranets were established several years ago, and may have been designed in an ad-hoc way, since grown very large and difficult to manage, and no longer accurately reflect the organisation’s current goals, priorities, purpose, or functions. As a result, organisations are finding that IA issues aren’t only important in design, but also when revamping, redesigning and upgrading their information systems, and are looking to IA to help them to locate the information they need, make better choices and complete information tasks more rapidly and accurately.

This two-day interactive workshop will provide a thorough overview and understanding about how to effectively use information architecture to make your intranet or website as effective as possible. It will cover a wide range of information architecture issues such as the following:

- What information architecture is and how it can facilitate user experience
- Analysing and sorting content
- Carrying out user research: surveys, focus groups and card sorting
- Classifying, sorting and labelling within your information system
- Using wireframes and site maps: the ‘bread and butter’ tools of IA
- Navigating, indexing and designing page layouts
- Involving users via research, design games, prototypes and testing
- Effectively carrying out your IA project: tips, tools, techniques and processes</full-description>

<full-description>Throughout their days, people are engaging with complex information to manage their lives.

Speakers include...
* David Armano, VP Experience Design, Critical Mass
* Chris Crawford, Author & Inventor, Storytron
* Bill DeRouchey, Sr. Interaction Designer, Ziba Design
* Aradhana Goel, Service Design Strategist, IDEO
* Andrew Hinton, Lead Information Architect, Vanguard
* Jason Kunesh, Independent Design Professional

and more.

Price:
For IAI members, $350 until Aug. 17th, $450 between Aug. 18th - Oct. 7th

For non-members, $450 until Aug. 17th, $550 between Aug. 18th - Oct. 7th

There are student and group discounts. IAI membership is $40/year.

<full-description>Interface stands on the shoulders of infrastructure. User experience relies on the foundation systems of information architecture. And, the biggest problem on today’s web sites and intranets is findability. In this presentation, Peter Morville draws upon examples from e-commerce, education, and government to illustrate best practices and fundamental concepts of user-centered design. He explores the complex relationships between strategy and structure, showing how user research should guide decisions about technology and features. And, he highlights key challenges and opportunities in interaction design, information architecture, and search.

When visitors try to connect, they have to select "HaveYouTriedTheCarrotCake?" as the wireless network.

This is called a nudge and it is what we will be discussing in the next IxDA meeting. Sarah G. Mitchell will be leading a discussion based on the book from Richard H Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein (Obama's head of Information and Regulatory Affairs) titled "Nudge:Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness". It breaks down the effects of defaults, option placement and other aspects of choice architecture.</full-description>

<full-description>InfoCamp is a collaborative unconference for the information community.

It features an egalitarian, community-driven format in which most presentations are designed and delivered by participants.

And it's a lot of fun!

Folks who attended last year's InfoCamp said...

"Amazing diversity and enthusiasm. I felt like I was part of a community of passionate professionals."

"I needed a break from the rules and restrictions of the domain I work in and just explore ideas and concepts. InfoCamp totally did that for me."

"I felt much more at ease presenting at InfoCamp than I have anywhere else - the participants were amazing: they asked questions, made comments/discussion, were interested and friendly - in short, IT WAS AWESOME!"

Tickets: $50 (or $10 for students). Register online at http://infocamp2009.eventbrite.com

Schedule: 9am-5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with a party on Saturday evening.

Speakers: At InfoCamp, most sessions are given by the participants (that means you). But to kick things off, we're bringing in a couple of speakin' superstars! This year, our keynote speaker on Saturday will be Axel Roesler (prof. of interaction design at the UW school of art), and our plenary speaker on Sunday will be Vanessa Fox (SEO expert, consultant, and writer).
