This advanced information architecture seminar combines lecture, demonstration and exercises, discussion, and handouts to address a topic that bewilders every large organization: designing unified information architectures for large enterprises. You'll learn to:
* Develop main pages and other upper-level "portal" components that convey a single cohesive organization, not a collection of warring business units.
* Use metadata and contextual navigation to help users move from one content-rich page to another, regardless of which business unit manages that content.
* Design search interfaces for improved access to content stored in organizational "silos".
* Better implement an enterprise-wide information architecture through appropriate research and design methods and improved governance.

Seminar Schedule and Outline

Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8am. The seminar starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm, followed by an extremely happy hour. During the day, we'll cover these topics:
* Overview of enterprise information architecture (EIA)
* EIA from the top-down: taxonomies, guides, and other techniques for unifying departmental content
* EIA from the bottom-up: content models and metadata to enable contextual navigation from page to page
* EIA and search: indexing cross-departmental content, presenting results consistently
* EIA and the organization: models for rolling out an enterprise information architecture, staffing it, and paying for and managing it in a distributed corporate environment

What's Included

* Handouts including presentation slides and references to related readings, software products, and other useful resources.
* A variety of opportunities to network with attendees, including a post-seminar happy hour with Lou Rosenfeld, Steve Krug, and other members of the local information architecture and usability communities. In these new fields, knowing your peers is invaluable.</full-description>

Duration: 90 minutes

Cost: $50 per attendee.

Description:
Building applications and systems to support customer processes - either self service or call center support - requires an understanding of your customer's 'intent' as well as their mental model. Terminology has to be intuitive and self evident in the case of self service, or needs to lead the service rep down the correct path in the case of call center support.

In this session, you'll hear about:

- a large health insurance company who will discuss how they approached developing a taxonomy and metadata
standard to support a 17,000 person call center

- a case study about a large UK based telecom service company and how they structured content and
tagging to support web self service and an interactive voice response (IVR) deployment.

Presenters:

- Seth Earley is founder and senior consultant for Earley & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in knowledge, content and document management systems with a focus on taxonomy development and workflow design. With 20 plus years in the technology field, he has been involved in knowledge and content management processes for the past 12 years.

- Glenn Bair manages e learning at Aetna Insurance. (more to come)

- Greg Reid is President and CEO of InFuture LLC. He has over 16 years of consulting and project management experience in information, content and knowledge management. Prior to creating InFuture, he was a Partner in Accenture’s Human Performance management consulting practice. <full-description>The 2006 Euro IA Summit theme is ’Building Our Practice’ After the success of last year’s Euro IA Summit, it was obvious we had to organise another one this year. This year we want to look at what it takes to be an IA in Europe. What are the things that we have in common? What are the specifc issues we have to deal with in our country or our business? How can we extend and build the practice of IA in Europe?

*Why do we need a European Summit?*

For starters, if you live over here, it’s a lot easier to get to Berlin than the U.S. or Canada. Second, when we deal with multi-language applications, we really mean it - there are over 20 national languages within the EU alone. Third, we are doing amazing things with alternative interfaces - phones and pocket computers, for example. Most important of all, we are European, not North American - and we see the world a little differently.</full-description>

<full-description>When Comcast was founded in 1963, cable television was primarily a means to bring broadcast signals to customers that, due to distance or geography, were unable to receive them clearly with antennas. Today, over 21 million customers can receive hundreds of channels, internet access and more from Comcast. And the technology continues to progress at a sometimes dizzying pace. Comcast, however, is a leader in our industry. Our goal here in Comcast Interactive Media is to continue to enhance Comcast’s award winning portal and develop and grow Comcast’s online content and interactive businesses.

On October 12th, we will host an "Invitation Only" Open House at our headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the information Architecture, Interactive Graphic Design, Web Development, Software Engineering, Video, Editorial /Production, Product Management and Creative departments. If you’d like to be part of the excitement please send your resume to Cim_Invitational1@Comcast.com today!

<full-description>The next Canberra IA Cocktail Hour is on Tuesday 14 November 2006.
We've moved it to the second Tuesday... there will be bit of a horse race and some possibility of drinking on the first Tuesday :)

Donna Maurer, IA extraordinaire and a talented presenter, will be talking on everything you need to know (and some you don't) about IA structures - hierarchies, faceted classification, database, organic structures

We follow a meet'n'greet/presentation/chat format, with the emphasis on information exchange at practitioner level. This is a great opportunity to talk with other IAs in Canberra, have a few drinks, and chat about work.

Time: 17:00-18:30
Day/Date: Tuesday 14 November 2006
Venue: SMS Management & Technology
Ground Floor, 8 Brindabella Circuit
CANBERRA AIRPORT ACT

Please RSVP by COB Wednesday 8 November 2006 for catering purposes.

Parking: a reminder that Brindabella Park has different parking arrangements than those found in many parts of Canberra - there is free parking for the first hour adjacent to the entrance of 8 Brindabella Circuit. After that you have to move your car or pay for parking (and this applies past the end of the meeting).

PS: there is a contact list for the Canberra IA Cocktail Hours: you can join via http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/canberra_ia_community</full-description>

<full-description>Design problems are increasingly becoming information problems.

Throughout their days, people are engaging with complex information to manage their lives.

And designers now realize that information isn't simply this stuff you find -- the appropriate presentation of information helps people make sense of the world around them.

This conference addresses issues of design for an always-on, always-connected world. Where "cyberspace" is a meaningless term because the online and offline worlds cannot be made distinct. Where physical spaces are so complex that detailed wayfinding is necessary to navigate them. Where work processes have become so involved, and so digitized, that we need new processes to manage those processes.

This conference brings together people who are addressing these challenges head on. Speakers from a variety of backgrounds will discuss designing complex information spaces in the physical and virtual worlds. program.

What's a "design slam"?
During the meeting, participants will be teamed and introduced to a full-fledged hypothetical project, including appropriate client-side deliverables. They'll then have an opportunity to interview key players on the client's team. The session will conclude with proposal presentations from each of the groups to the "clients" and the assembled audience.

Then the "clients" team will choose a winner. Members of the winning team will receive a plethora of praise from your peers and an award.

What's in it for me?
This is a chance for interested IAs, designers, usability practitioners, developers and marketing professionals to get their hands dirty working side by side with colleagues as they tackle tough business problems in a fun and sometimes crazy environment. Knowledge transfer, technique sharing, and a social atmosphere makes this session stand out from the garden-variety "lecture-and-Powerpoint" presentation.

Those that want to participate need to be at the meeting by 6:15pm at the latest. The client team will be introducing the design challenge promptly at 6:25.

If you do not want to participate due to not being able to get to the meeting on-time or a severe case of social phobia, fear not! We would like to have an audience during this session to play the role of users, and help choose the winning team.

This idea is shamelessly stolen (with permission) from the IA Summit's IA Slam. For more information about the IA Slam, visit http://www.e-reiss.com/Seminars.aspx.</full-description>

Interest in content user-assigned tags is one of the big new stories on the Web. But content tagging is not a new story. What's new about Web 2.0 is that end users are doing the tagging instead of librarians, and the results are being shown almost instantly on websites like flickr, del.icio.us, Wikipedia, and Technorati.Librarians have long contended that end users cannot usefully tag content because they are not trained in how to do indexing. More correctly, end users cannot tag content the way librarians tag content. But this begs the question about what kind of tagging is useful.

Joseph will discuss the usefulness to be found in tagging as it relates to librarians and usability professionals, the Semantic Web, and document and content management practices.

Joseph Busch is the Founder and a Principal of Taxonomy Strategies. Joseph is an authority in the field of information science, a past President of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and an appointee to the Board of Directors of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. He is a frequent speaker on metadata, taxonomy, indexing, classification research, information retrieval, and content management. Read more about Joseph at Taxonomy Strategies. </full-description>

Designing and implementing a practical and effective taxonomy always starts with a practical and effective set of project requirements. Whether you're developing or implementing a taxonomy, using in-house talent or creating a vendor/consultant request for proposal (RFP), you need to clearly scope the project and identify the application framework. When you get the ball rolling with a set of well-defined goals and requirements, you'll be more likely to end up with a result that meets your expectations. In this session, our speakers will offer practical insights into the requirements development process.

We'll learn about:
*        Scoping your taxonomy project
*        Defining your application framework
*        Creating effective RFPs
* Aligning project requirements with your goals and expectations

Presenters: Seth Earley (Earley & Associates), Jie-hong Morrison (Computer Technologies Consultants, Inc.), Harry Ringwood (Philip Morris)</full-description>

The happy hour is open to folks interested in HCI, design, and information technology (among other things), so tell a friend!

About our sponsor:
Morgan Creative
Other search firms will promise you the moon and stars. We’ll give you a galaxy of opportunity.

Thanks to our small size, tight focus on creative and area connections, Morgan Creative Search outfoxes the big guys. From advertising to interactive, marketing to PR - if it’s on your agency’s organizational chart, we do it.

Here’s a small sampling of the reasons we’re so damn loveable:

    * We specialize in full-time placement of creative positions only
    * We actively coach each of our candidates on the interview process, as well as the company, culture and position
    * The vast majority of our candidates are referrals from reliable sources
    * We personally meet every candidate we present face-to-face, to make sure they aren’t sociopaths or jerks
    * We scour our candidates’ references with a fine-toothed comb
    * We developed an invaluable tool called 7 Tips to Successful Interviewing
    * We are experts at matching soft and hard skills
    * We give referral fees if we place the candidate
    * And much, much more!

A true boutique firm (no, we don’t do hair and makeup, although Samantha always looks impeccable), we’re able to offer you the attention you crave, and the one-on-one service you deserve. </full-description>

“Conversation is king. Content is just something to talk about.” – Cory Doctorow

How can design address the increasing demand for collaborative work, meaningful conversation and social connection? In this presentation, Andrew will explore how “Community of Practice” is more than just a 90s knowledge-management buzz-phrase. He will argue that it is an important model for understanding group behavior – and one that is becoming crucial to designing in the age of Wikipedia, MySpace and YouTube.

Andrew will provide an essential understanding of "communities of practice" and will look at information architecture as a handy example. He will also examine how the concept helps designers in planning for a variety of collaborative environments – from intranets and medical forums to multiplayer games.

* Enterprise information architecture (EIA) from the bottom-up: content models and metadata to enable contextual navigation from page to page
* EIA and search: indexing cross-departmental content, presenting results consistently
* EIA and the organization: models for rolling out an enterprise information architecture, staffing it, and paying for and managing it in a distributed corporate environment

What's Included

* Handouts including over 260 presentation slides and references to related readings, software products, and other useful resources.
* A variety of opportunities to network with attendees, including a post-seminar happy hour with Lou Rosenfeld, Steve Krug, and other members of the local information architecture and usability communities. In these new fields, knowing your peers is invaluable.</full-description>

<full-description>The field of user experience is too young to be caught up in trade secrets and intellectual isolation. To help advance the field, Adaptive Path promotes its ideas at public workshops around the world, and send them out as free essays in our newsletters.

Adaptive Path is leading the way to user-focused design by placing emphasis on how design affects the user. For those who adhere to the tenets of user-centered design, Adaptive Path assures dividends. This is UX Intensive defined. This workshop series examines the four key elements that contribute to a successful interactive experience: Design Strategy, Design Research, Interaction Design and Information Architecture.

The workshops of UX Intensive are for experienced designers and their managers who are looking to learn new ways to provide leadership within their organizations through design and research. Workshop participants leave each day with more sophisticated understanding of their field and a new set of tools to put that understanding to good use.

The workshops are taught by leaders in the field. These designers and researchers are the folks to whom Google, Sony, Greenpeace, The United Nations, and Intel turn to when they need to reconsider their customers’ interactive
experiences:

•	Dan Saffer, author of the bestseller ‘Designing for interaction,’ leads the workshop on Interaction Design.
•	Chiara Fox, senior information architect for Adaptive Path, has developed information architectures for companies such as PeopleSoft, AT&T, and Hewlett-Packard, to name only a few
•	Todd Wilkens is an accomplished writer and lecturer on the topics of user research methods and social science theory.
•	Brandon Schauer is a Design Strategist who’s desire to understanding the unmet needs of customers has led him to diverse environments, from the homes of cancer patients to tunnels beneath Walt Disney World.

<full-description>The International Institute for Information Design (IIID) is proud to announce Vision Plus 12, a multi-disciplinary international conference devoted to exploring one of the most critical issues facing communicators today: how to measure the impact of information-relevant communications. This event, the twelfth in the Vision Plus series of symposia, will be held July 5 - 7, 2007, in Schwarzenberg, located in the breathtakingly beautiful Bregenzerwald region, in Vorarlberg, Austria.

The Theme for Vision Plus 12

Everyone agrees: design is the intermediary between information and understanding. But how can we demonstrate the truth of that proposition? How can we measure the impact and quantify the results? Vision Plus 12 will explore this controversial question from all sides:
•	How and to what extent can we measure the success of a given work?
•	How do we quantify the role and impact of intangibles such as design?
•	What techniques and technologies can be used to get measurable results?
•	How do information designers build the necessary metrics into their projects?
•	What are educators and researchers doing to tackle this challenge?

The IIID welcomes proposals that shed light on any aspects of this theme.

Please note that there is also a Call for Speakers for this conference (Deadline: 15 January 2007). For event details and proposal guidelines for Call for Speakers please go to www.iiid-visionplus.net.</full-description>

What Would It Mean to Become a UPA Chapter?
As we explore the possibility of becoming a chapter, we thought it would be interesting to hear from someone who’s been an integral part of the most successful UPA chapter in the world, Boston UPA …

Chauncey Wilson, a founding member and past president of Boston UPA, will be joining us at this meeting. He’ll be giving a half hour talk on his experience with Boston UPA, and answering your questions. Afterwards, we invite everyone to take part in an informal group discussion on the future of NH UX.

About Chauncey Wilson:
Chauncey Wilson has spent 20 years as an engineering psychologist, user interface designer, usability engineer, and product development manager. His academic background includes a physics degree and graduate training in social psychology, human factors engineering, and statistics. His consulting clients have included Microsoft, FEDEX, Lotus, Reuters, and 3COM. He is past president of the Northern New England chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and the STC Usability SIG, and member of the Usability Professionals' Association, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the ACM SIGCHI. He co-wrote The Usability Engineering Framework for Product Design and Evaluation in the handbook of HCI and has presented on the psychology of victimization, research ethics, cyberlaw, usability methods, web design, and documentation usability.

Most folks know that taxonomy has something to do with organizing things.

Fewer folks know, however, that taxonomy is the practice of classification, which originally began as a science devoted to the classification of living organisms. And that over time, taxonomy has become known as the classification of just about anything and everything.

Even fewer get down into the weeds and do the work that goes beyond simple classification that makes today’s information systems work: meta data, facets, controlled vocabulary, thesauri, synonym maps, ontologies, tagging…

What’s troubling about this divide between those that know about taxonomy and those that don’t is the very importance of taxonomy. For lots of designers & developers, the applications, websites, and interactive products they spend their waking hours creating could not function without well-structured, carefully crafted information structures.

This month’s PhillyCHI meeting will explore in practical and tangible terms the specific ways taxonomy is important to the work we do. We will discuss the design, implementation, and governance of taxonomies by examining four real-world case studies:

    * a user-centric catalog for a large e-commerce site and its impact on the user experience
    * a content-heavy non-profit information site
    * a system processing data through controlled vocabularies and thesauri
    * a consumer-driven search engine

Plenty of time will be reserved at the end of the meeting for discussion, so bring your tough questions!

    <full-description>Benefits

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

In this presentation, Dennis will share some of his adventures using anthropological tools to inform Information Architecture including some fascinating insights uncovered from raiding people's glove boxes, which directly drove the experience design of the Ford vehicles owners' website. The presentation will help attendees begin to look at Web Design through an anthropological lens, shedding new light on old design problems.

Dennis will also discuss some of the cutting edge ideas and methodologies recently presented at the EPIC2007, the premier international event for practitioners of ethnographic work in industry (not academic). In addition, he will speculate as to what might be some near-term trends we all should take note of.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Mr. Schleicher is a Senior Information Architect at E.magination.com in Baltimore Maryland. He has a background in business and industrial anthropology and has been working awhile in the field of information technology and culture. He later moved into Information Architecture and found, to his surprise, that many anthropological tools and skills were very useful to IA and Web design.
