<full-description>Many of us who studied design in college missed those ‘leadership classes’ typically offered to the business students—our educational focus was on learning creative processes and improving our visual skills. As the definition of corporate competitiveness evolves, the expectations placed upon the design profession grow exponentially. Designers are perfectly predisposed to strengthen their organization’s competitive position because they are advocates of innovation and creative thinking.

Maureen Thurston will discuss the fundamental precepts of leadership, diagnose the role of the design leader, explore how core leadership skills can be learned, applied and leveraged, as well as help you develop your own personal leadership style.

What you will learn:

    * Examining leadership and its impact on the design profession
    * Deciphering the myth, mystique and specific traits of leadership
    * What are the nuances between managing and leading
    * How to hone your ‘inner-leader’ skills

How you will benefit:
As designers ascend the management ladder, one of the hardest challenges they will face is conquering the ‘soft’ skills of leadership. Through readings, assignments, Socratic-styled discussions and experience-based exercises, this seminar provides participants with specific tools that will transfer leadership skills into effective practice.

Maureen Thurston is an accomplished strategist and author of Design Leverage, and a former Professor of Design Management at Art Center College of Design. Maureen is Principal and Founder of ACCESS International, the first United States brokerage for state-of–the-art product design application.

    Feedback from past attendees:
Fantastic! Helpful not only for my current situation as a design leader, but for my future career.
Great seminar! A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Description: Taxonomy and metadata standards projects can be abstract and difficult to explain. However, unless you are able to clearly convey the value of this work, it will be challenging, if not impossible to get organizational support, resources and buy in. How do you get management to understand how taxonomy can improve business processes and help achieve goals of improved productivity as well as provide a foundation for new capabilities that the organization will need down the road? How can the magnitude of the effort be explained while convincing decision makers that the investment in these kinds of projects are core to organizational adaptability and flexibility? How do you explain the role of taxonomy projects in the era of "just get Google"?

Join us to learn how Jeff Auker, Assistant Vice President in the Hartford's Personal Lines Department managed communications and gained support for an enterprise taxonomy initiative at the insurance company. This session is a must hear event for anyone struggling with getting and retaining organizational support for their taxonomy and information architecture programs. </full-description>

<full-description>In today?s global competitive environment business model thinking is an essential skill for every business person. A recent CEO survey by IBM shows that business models and business model innovation are on top of the executive agenda. Also, entrepreneurs across industries are searching for the most appropriate business models to bring new and innovative products and services to the market.

Unfortunately, management literature provides little methodological guidance that helps executives and entrepreneurs systematically reflect on the topic of business model design and innovation. This workshop addresses that gap by providing participants with a powerful, tested and pragmatic approach that assists business people in designing competitive and innovative business models.

The approach is based on the ?Business Model Canvas?, which allows business people to describe business models with a simple and common language based on 9 building blocks. This language can then be used to assess business models and come up with new and innovative business model alternatives. The approach appeals to senior executives, department heads, entrepreneurs and financiers alike, since all have a common need of identifying and implementing competitive and sustainable business models.

In this workshop you will:
    * sense why it is indispensable for you to start thinking in terms of business models in today?s competitive landscape
    * learn how to describe your own business model(s) based on the intuitive and pragmatic Business Model Canvas approach
    * be able to generate business model alternatives in your own competitive environment
    * apply the Business Model Canvas approach in break-out sessions
