SUMMARY:NH UPA January Meeting, speaker Jared Spool
LOCATION:Durham, New Hampshire, USA
DESCRIPTION:For our first official UPA chapter meeting we will kick off the
New Year with special guest Jared Spool, an internationally renowned autho
rity on usability, to discuss what makes a design seem intuitive.
\n
\nWhen
 :
\nThursday, January 24th
\nRefreshments & Networking: 6-7:00 PM – Food &
 beverages will be provided.
\nMeeting: 7:00 PM – 8ish
\n
\nWhere:
\nUnivers
 ity of New Hampshire (UNH)
\nKingsbury Hall, Room N101
\n33 College Road
\n
 Durham, NH
\n
\nCampus Map: http://www.unh.edu/map/UNHCampusMapcrop.pdf
\n
 \nDirections: http://www.unh.edu/transportation/visitor/directions.htm
\n
\
nParking Directions: Park in Lot B
\n
\nTopic:
\n
\nWhat Makes a Design See
 m Intuitive?
\n
\nEveryone wants an "intuitive" interface: the users, the d
esigners, and the content publishers. But building them is hard. User Inter
face Engineering's recent research has given insight into why it's hard and
how to get past major obstacles.
\n
\nTo build an "intuitive" interface, a
designer has to do two things: (1) Take complete advantage of what the use
r already knows, so what they see is completely familiar to them and (2) ma
ke the act of learning anything new completely imperceptible to the user. I
t turns out, if the interface requires the user to realize they are learnin
g something, the "intuitive" label disappears instantly.
\n
\nIn this talk,
  Jared will show:
\n+ How users need both tool knowledge and domain knowled
 ge to complete their tasks
\n+ How simple problems with designs can cause b
 ig problems for users
\n+ What successful teams are doing to create experie
 nces that delight
\n
\nJared will show examples from Microsoft Word, MSN, G
oogle Talk, Flickr, Avis, and many more.
\n
\nRSVP:
\nSeats are limited. Y
ou must RSVP to attend, so don’t delay in reserving your spot! Send RSVPs t
o info@nhupa.org. You will receive an email confirmation once your name has
been added to the list of attendees.
\n
\nNH UPA meetings are open to anyo
ne who is interested in attending. Membership to the UPA is NOT required.
\
