<full-description>How do you thrive in an industry that seems to change irrevocably every few days? At paidContent, we chronicle the world of social media on a minute-by-minute basis. But sometimes, in an industry moving so fast, it's useful, fun, and necessary to allow yourself a day away from the everyday to think, learn, and network alongside your fellow industry leaders. So on April 26, ContentNext Media, our parent company, is presenting its first conference, The Economics of Social Media, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Over one packed day, in a series of large and small sessions we're designing to ensure maximum participation, we'll examine the tremendous changes social media is bringing to:

Traditional media
Newspapers and magazines surely aren't what they used to be
Movies, television, music, and games
The entrenched players are having to play catch up
Marketing
You'll never sell anything the same way again
Venture capital and mergers & acquisitions
How deals happen, what deals are coming
Mobile media
How social media is changing the most social of all devices: the mobile phone
Nanomedia
    The blogosphere takes center stage

With the acknowledged leaders of this industry (and some surprises), we will discuss the business, financial and economic aspects arising out of the disruption being caused by the rise of social media, emerging business models, and how all this is changing the dynamics of many industries. Watch this space over the next few weeks as we introduce our speakers and panelists. As we fill out that list, we'll also let you know about the social media aspects we're integrating into the conference, including a chance for attendees to tell us which topics we're missing and program a panel to fill it.

In 2005, MySpace broke all the rules. In 2006, YouTube broke whatever rules remained. What's next? At The Economics of Social Media, you'll get some early warning. You'll probably give some early warning, too. </full-description>

Social Dynamics in the Age of the Web

Bernardo A. Huberman, HP Labs

The web mediates interactions among distant people on a scale that was never possible in the physical world. From vast social networks, to grass-root amateur creativity and the creation of encyclopedic knowledge, a collective intelligence is at work in ways that differ from traditional communities in style, intensity and effectiveness of interaction. I will present the results of several studies of social dynamics in the web, as well as mechanisms we have designed to access this collective intelligence while improving users experiences with digital content.

Bernardo Huberman is a Senior HP Fellow and the Director of the Information Dynamics Lab at Hewlett Packard Laboratories. He is also a Consulting Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at Stanford University. Before joining HP Labs he worked for many years at Xerox Parc.

For the past eight years his research has concentrated on the phenomenon of Web, with an emphasis on the design of novel mechanisms for discovering and aggregating information. More information on his work is available at: http://www.hpl.hp.com/research/idl/people/huberman.</full-description>

<full-description>It turns out the "if you build it, they will come" approach doesn't work. Even when someone can see your site's value, enticing them to request your newsletter, subscribe to your service, join your community, or take advantage of your offer continues to be a challenge. For long term success, we have to remove obstacles and motivate our visitors to sign up.

In this 90-minute online presentation, Joshua Porter, author of Designing for the Social Web, will show you why, from a psychological perspective, it's hard to get people to sign up, even when they think what you're offering is valuable. He will describe the steps you can use to create the motivation for them to care about your product, using techniques employed by successful sites, such as Netflix, TripIt, and BlinkSale.

<full-description>Web 2.0 has brought a new generation of online tools that enable users to network, share resources and participate in discussions on a global scale.

This growth in social media is indicative of its entry into mainstream culture and its integration into the daily lives of many. Even in its infancy, social media is having a profound effect on its audience, by offering them new and varied ways to communicate and create - changing their status from user to 'produsers'; breaking the traditional, more closed structure of mass media.

New Frontiers in Social Media is an event that will explore how social media will influence our lives in the future.
The event will bring together a mix of thought leaders, professionals and academics to answer the questions - How will these technologies evolve? How will they create new experiences for users? and how will they impact social changes?

<full-description>Six full day workshops for web designers, developers and managers

Indi Young - Mental Models

If you are a product designer, user experience professional, or design researcher looking to create better web products for your organisation or clients, don’t miss this full day workshop.

Lisa Herrod - Web usability: a holistic approach

Creating a great user experience is now expected of the entire project team. This hands on practical workshop is for people who need to understand usability in the context of their role, who want to improve their skills and take a more professional approach to it in their work.

Andy Clarke - Visual Web Design Masterclass
This one day masterclass will inspire you to make the best design possible for the web, showing you new ways of working with CSS and standards based markup to create beautiful designs using classic typography and layout.

Christian Heilmann - Pragmatic, accessible JavaScript in a web services world

In this workshop we’ll take a rather messed up old web product and clean it up to make it accessible, easy to maintain and hand over to third parties, and always up-to-date by piggy-backing on web services like Yahoo’s YQL and Pipes, and social systems like Twitter, Flickr and Delicious.

Brian Fling - Creating mobile 2.0 web apps

More mobile devices can access the Internet than there are desktop computers. More people can make purchases with a mobile phone than have credit cards. But how do you build for it? And how can you make money doing it? In this full day workshop we will find answers to both these questions by creating a mobile application together.

Grant Young - Engaging social media

This workshop is ideal for anyone considering engagement in social media either at a strategy or tactical level. This is not a technical session and although we will briefly touch on some popular sites, the focus will be on how you and your organisation can effectively and authentically engage participants.</full-description>

There is no single methodology for creating the perfect web product. But you can increase your odds, and one of the best ways to do this is to really understand users' reasons for doing things. Indi Young's Mental Models workshop will give you the tools to help you grasp, and design for, those reasons. If you are a product designer, user experience professional, or design researcher looking to create better web products for your organisation or clients, don't miss this full day workshop.

Lisa Herrod - Web usability: a holistic approach

Creating a great 'User Experience' is now expected not only of the Usability Specialist, but also of the entire project team. More than ever, web practitioners across all roles within a team are required to have knowledge of and even experience in conducting user research and usability testing. The current economic climate adds to this pressure as businesses strive to get the best from their online investments.

This workshop is for people who need to understand usability in the context of their role, who want to improve their skills and take a more professional approach to it in their work. This is a hands on practical workshop combined with discussions on a variety of methods and approaches to implementing usability in the real world.

Andy Clarke - Visual Web Design Masterclass
Sometimes, in all the excitement about AJAX, APIs, frameworks and other technical whizz-bangs, talk about visual design on the web gets lost. This one day masterclass by the the author of Transcending CSS, Andy Clarke, will inspire you to make the best design possible for the web, and show you how to discover new ideas and new ways of working with CSS and standards based markup.</full-description>

<full-description>Designing social websites and applications or adding a social dimension to an existing project entails its own unique challenges way beyond those involved in creating experiences for individuals interacting alone with an interface. Any of the following sound familiar?

* I’m a designer being asked to add “social” to my site!
* I have an active community on my site but people are misbehaving. How can I get that under control?
* We want to build a really cool social experience around [thingy] but we’re not sure how to get people to come join the fun.
* I have a great idea for a social utility but I don’t want to have to first re-create the social infrastructure of the web inside of it.
* People come and read my content, but they’re invisible to each other. How can I peel away the layers so they can participate with each other?
* I’m worried I’m missing an opportunity to help my members connect with each other in the real world.

In this full-day workshop, we’ll address these challenges and more. You’ll explore the landscape of social user experience design patterns and anti-patterns, focusing on the contexts in which specific interface designs work well and the unintended consequences that make some UI ideas seem like a good idea until they turn around and bite you in your app.

Starting with a foundational set of high-level practices that underpin the individual interaction, Christian will present rules and tips for how to mix-and-match the individual social patterns and best practices to create compelling social experiences. Workshop activities will involve concept modeling and user interface sketching to explore the application of social interaction patterns to specific scenarios.</full-description>

<full-description>From its humble beginnings as a grass roots conference for standardistas, Web Directions has grown into Australia's web industry conference - run by experts for experts like you. This year's conference keeps true to our roots, while broadening the range of topics covered to make it genuinely an event for your whole team.

This year we've got 3 tracks - Design, Development and Business - with leading international and local experts in user experience, interface design, social media, coding and development, SEO, accessibility, interaction design and much more. We think there'll be no better place for people who work on the web in any way at all to learn, connect, share and experience ideas in 2009.

Just a few of the names and ideas we'll be covering:

* Kelly Goto - design ethnography evangelist and workflow expert
* Ben Galbraith - co-founder of Ajaxian & co-lead of Mozilla Foundations Tools team
* Elliot Jay Stocks - Famed UK web designer on CSS3 and other designer goodies
* Mark Boulton - designer and typography expert on the art and technology of web typography
* Christian Crumlish - curator of Yahoo!’s pattern library on designing social interfaces
* Deborah Schultz - Procter & Gamble’s Global Strategic Adviser for Social Media & Emerging Technology
* Philip Fierlinger - Rapid prototyping
* Luke Stevens - Data driven design
* Dmitry Baranovskiy - Canvas

Web Directions is an experience way beyond all these great sessions though. Fully catered breaks and lunches held at the venue, parties every night, and a Birds of a Feather breakfast all mean no shortage of opportunities to meet the local industry. No matter what size or type of organisation you work in, we guarantee you'll come away from Web Directions feeling enmeshed in the larger web community.</full-description>

Taxonomy, Navigation, Social Media & User Interface - June Taxonomy Community of Practice Webinar

What is a good taxonomy? It’s more than a clever organization of concepts and terms. A good taxonomy must make sense from a user-interface and usability perspective. This month, our speakers will drill into key user-centric factors for creating high-impact taxonomies.

John Qarto-vonTivadar’s focus is on how our cognitive styles and temperaments radically influence the gathering and processing of information. This has implications for taxonomy and search, often in ways that are glossed over as "noise", "outliers", or "too complex to account for". Paying attention to these factors can provide the special sauce necessary for users to get value from taxonomy.

Bob Goodman will map out best practices based on real-world case studies from his large-scale search and online community projects. Representative practices include how to integrate content-consumption with content-sharing, how to invite users to take action, and how to build on user-generated rankings. Taken together, these practices keep content dynamic and engaging.

Taxonomy plays a variety of roles in today's information environments – enabling records management, search optimization, personalization and social media among other initiatives. While the role of taxonomy continues to expand, it has always been a key enabler of good navigation and UI. Good navigation is critical for getting users to the content they need.

Join us this month to hear lessons learned, best practices, and techniques for developing taxonomies with a navigational focus, as well as creative ways to integrate taxonomy into your overall UI.

Rapid innovation and competing offerings make us feel so powerful, but we go to work and feel so lame with the tools behind the firewall. Unless large organizations address this growing usability gap, their kludge offerings will come to be seen as a "hostile work environments" by digital natives and a competitive disadvantage in attracting and retaining talent.
