SUMMARY:NYC-UPA Event: Technologies for User Research
LOCATION:New York, New York, USA
DESCRIPTION:Registration: 6:00pm (refreshments served)
\nPresentation: 6:3
 0pm to 8:00pm (includes Q&A)
\nNetworking: 8:00pm to 8:30pm
\nDinner at a
nearby restaurant: 8:30pm to whenever (participants pay for their own dinn
 er)
\nLocation: Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, Laura Parsons P
ratt Conference Center, 281 Park Avenue South (at 22nd Street).
\n
\nUsabi
lity practitioners are in the enviable position of researching and evaluati
ng new technologies - but are often limited by the tools available for cond
ucting this research. A number of solutions have recently become available
to support the process of user research. There are also several emerging te
chnologies that have the potential to change what/how research will be perf
 ormed in the near future.
\n
\nThe presentation will cover the following t
 opics:
\n• The goals and limitations of current user research technologi
 es
\n• Overview of some of the latest user research tools (e.g. remote t
 esting, eye tracking, digital ethnography)
\n• Criteria for evaluating u
 ser research technology
\n• Discussion of emerging technology trends (e.
 g. ubiquitous computing, product integration) and their impact on user rese
 arch capabilities
\n
\nAttendees to the presentation will gain a better un
derstanding of what user research technology can and cannot do, what tools
are currently available to support research, and what may be available in t
 he future.
\n
\nAbout the speaker:
\nRob Tannen, PhD, is the Director of
Human Factors for Electronic Ink, a sixteen-year old firm that applies prod
uct design methodology to creating usable software interfaces.
\n
\nRob ha
s provided human factors expertise in applications including cockpit displa
ys, emergency dispatch, GPS navigation, equities trading and Web site desig
 n.
\n
\nRob is also a leader of the Industrial Design Society of America H
uman Factors Section, which promotes human factors and research methods to
 designers: http://www.humanfactors.typepad.com/idsa/
\n

SUMMARY:Eyetracking Web Usability
LOCATION:Copenhagen, Denmark
DESCRIPTION:Jakob Nielsen and Kara Pernice Coyne from Nielsen Norman Group
come to Denmark to present their newest research findings.
\n
\n255 users
used a variety of websites to perform real tasks while their gaze direction
was recorded by an eyetracker. The resulting 1.2 million fixations indicat
e where people look on Web pages.
\n
\nThe findings have implications for h
 ow to design:
\n
\n* homepage layout
\n
\n* page design
\n
\n* search
\n
\n

\nAvenue A | Razorfish will present an overview of the User Research metho
 d of Collaging
\n
\nCollaging is an exercise where users select randomly ch
osen images that represent the type of experience they seek. Users then hav
e a conversation with the moderator about the reasons behind their choices.
The data generated from this exercise provides insight into the context us
ers bring to a specific interaction, enabling design teams to create valuab
 le user experiences.
\n
\nThis presentation will explain the development of
the method of Collaging, how to perform it, when it is useful, when it is
not, and how to apply findings. In addition, examples from case studies wil
l be discussed, and a live Collaging exercise will be performed with partic
ipants from the audience to generate data used for the new PhillyCHI websit
 e.
\n
\nAbout Our Sponsor:
\nAvenue A | Razorfish is one of the largest int

SUMMARY:Involution Master Academy: Design Research Methods
LOCATION:Sunnyvale, California, USA
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Steve Portigal
\nSteve is the founder of Portigal Co
nsulting, a boutique agency that helps clients discover and act on new insi
ghts about themselves and their customers. He has conducted hundreds of eth
nographic interviews in homes, public spaces, and work places, interviewing
families, hotel maintenance staff, architects, rock musicians, home automa
 tion enthusiasts, and radiologists.
\nThis course will provide first-hand
knowledge and training in core design research methods. At its root, design
research emphasizes learning about people and using the insights gained to
inform and inspire design. We will focus on exemplary models of what resea
rch is, what it looks like, its role in concept generation, and what it pro
 duces.
\n
\nStudents will develop their own design research philosophy, lea
rn how to think about people, behavior, and culture, as well as the importa
nce of being open to new perspectives. They will also learn tactical skills
they can immediately put into practice: how to conduct observations and in
terviews, find research participants, and interpret and synthesize results
as fodder for design and storytelling.
\n
\nAs with all Involution Master A
cademy courses, this class is limited to nine students. This guarantees eac
h student significant interaction with Steve and a unique opportunity to ro
ll up your sleeves and put these ideas into practice with the recognized in
dustry expert on this topic and your eight classmates. It also means that t
here are very few seats available, so sign up today!

LOCATION:Bedford, New Hampshire, USA
DESCRIPTION:When you think of TechSmith Morae, you probably think of testin
g things on a computer screen—like a software application or Web site. But
what about testing the iPhone user's experience? Could Morae speed up and s
implify a whole range of testing methods, from paper prototyping to in-dept
h interviews to focus groups? Could it enable unmoderated testing? The Mora
e development team is hard at work to support all these methods and approac
hes! In this session, we'll pull back the curtain to give you a peek at wha
t's coming...and demonstrate specific use scenarios. We hope you can join u
 s!
\n
\nShane Lovellette, the creator of Morae and UserVue, will be here fr
om TechSmith to give us a demo and explain the benefits of using the new ve
rsion of Morae and UserVue for conducting, recording, observing, analyzing,
and presenting the results of in-person and remote user research tests.
\n

\nSummary:
\nThe demo will cover how to: collect local and remote test ses
sion data, observe test sessions in local and remote environments, and anal
yze test sessions with the advanced analytical capabilities of the new v. 3
.0 of Morae Manager (not out yet!) and UserVue. We will learn about automat
ed and aggregated usability metric analysis, graphing and reporting, as wel
l as creating video highlight presentations.
\n
\nFor those of you who alre
ady use Morae and UserVue, Shane will answer any questions you have about t
he products and give us all a demo of the new version of Morae 3.
\n
\nAbo
 ut Shane Lovellette:
\nShane Lovellette is the product manager for Morae an
d UserVue. Shane came to TechSmith with over eight years of management and
production experience in video and television.
\n
\nRSVP:
\nPlease send RSV
