Meeting Summary:
This is the first ever joint PHICHI & AIGA meeting! As user experience professionals, we always need to interface and collaborate with graphic artists and designers. At times, we all know that this can be difficult. There is a lot that both professions can learn from each other in order to work better together. This is why PHICHI has decided to hold a joint meeting with the local chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).

We’ll take a closer look at Avenue A | Razorfish and GSI Commerce. For this first joint meeting, we decided to give members of both organizations a closer look at the User-Centered Design process of two local agencies, Avenue A | Razorfish and GSI Commerce. Each company will explain their design process from start to finish and show sample deliverables of their work. You will get to see how their design and user experience teams work together.

Registration is free! Please register for this meeting at: http://philadelphia.aiga.org/event_registration-reg.html

<full-description>The International Conference on Design & Emotion is a forum where practitioners, researchers and industry meet and exchange knowledge and insights concerning the cross-disciplinary field of design and emotion.

Emotions arise towards people, towards places, towards food, and towards things.

Emotions influence our well-being as well as our purchase decisions. From a design perspective, we need to know more about how artefacts elicit emotions. We also need to know more about the way we can identify the relevant emotional aspects and how we can evaluate the emotional impact of a particular design.

The International Conference on Design and Emotion 2006 is the arena for these topics. </full-description>

The open discussion will go on for the next week, until Tuesday October 17. Offsite (non-WELL member) readers with questions or comments may send them to inkwell@well.com to have them added to the conversation.

About The WELL

The WELL is a cherished and acclaimed destination for conversation and discussion. For twenty years it has captivated intelligent, creative people. It is widely known as the primordial ooze where the online community movement was born — where Howard Rheingold first coined the term "virtual community." Over the last two decades, it's been described as "the world's most influential online community" in a Wired Magazine cover story, and "the Park Place of email addresses" by John Perry Barlow. It's won Dvorak and Webby Awards, inspired songs and novels, and almost invisibly influences modern culture.

Now run by Salon Media Group, independent publishers of the ground-breaking Salon.com online news magazine, The WELL continues to cast a long cultural shadow. For many people it's the place you aren't quite sure you've heard of, but may just wish you had. For members, it's a place to come up with the next interesting thing and a way to live.

Hope to see you there!

Summary:
Come and get a behind the scenes look into the actual process used to solve design problems behind the creation of...

~QVC Active - Mike Madaio, Chief Internet Architect, QVC.com
The first US real-time two-way interactive TV shopping service. Viewers use their remote control to make purchases in a real-time environment, just as the product is being showcased on TV.

~Russound UNO-TSV Smart Color Touchscreen - Kyle Pero, Founding Principal, Usable Interface
A touchscreen device that controls a multiroom entertainment system, lighting and climate control. Users can easily decide what music they’d like to play and what mood they want to set in different rooms in their home.

~In-Stadium seat-based ECommerce Platform - Bill Bulman, Partner, MessageFirst
A kiosk-based Rich Internet Application that allows sports fans to purchase concessions and merchandise from their seats. Fans feel closer to their team, while the team learns important consumer data from their fans.

Each of these products are very different, but some of the same user-centered design methods were used in their creation (i.e. contextual inquiries, paper prototyping, user testing, etc). Attendees will learn which methods were used, as well as, why and how they were implemented. Research findings, insights, and lessons learned will all be shared.

<full-description>As usability professionals, our ability to observe users and to discover their patterns of interaction is integral to our work. By defining these patterns we can then leverage that knowledge to create usable interfaces that are familiar and useful to our users.

In 2007, UPA goes deep into the heart of Texas; to Austin, the sunny capital city on the banks of the Colorado River.

Austin's high tech area of Silicon Hills is familiar to much of the usability community, but Austin is also known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," is home to 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats, and has excellent museums. Bring the family along to enjoy the many outdoor activities around the Austin area including a variety of water sports and hiking and biking trails.

Join us next spring to master new techniques, contribute your opinion, meet colleagues and renew your commitment to making usable and useful products as we explore the patterns of feelings, responses and designs that our users need in the interfaces we create.</full-description>

What Would It Mean to Become a UPA Chapter?
As we explore the possibility of becoming a chapter, we thought it would be interesting to hear from someone who’s been an integral part of the most successful UPA chapter in the world, Boston UPA …

Chauncey Wilson, a founding member and past president of Boston UPA, will be joining us at this meeting. He’ll be giving a half hour talk on his experience with Boston UPA, and answering your questions. Afterwards, we invite everyone to take part in an informal group discussion on the future of NH UX.

About Chauncey Wilson:
Chauncey Wilson has spent 20 years as an engineering psychologist, user interface designer, usability engineer, and product development manager. His academic background includes a physics degree and graduate training in social psychology, human factors engineering, and statistics. <full-description>Why is it that at a time when user experience (UX) expertise is in high demand, countless UX professionals continue to feel misunderstood, undervalued, and unable to contribute to the success of the businesses for which they work in the ways and to the extent they can and often should?

What can be done to change that feeling — that reality? What can YOU do to move UX into a position of greater influence where YOU work?

Explore and formulate answers to these questions in a special workshop led by Richard Anderson, UX practice, management, and organizational strategy consultant and incoming Co-Editor-in-Chief of interactions magazine.

This highly interactive and participatory workshop will borrow elements from the very successful multi-session “Managing User Experience Groups” course Richard has co-taught in Silicon Valley, from the highly praised “Moving UX into a Position of Corporate Influence: Whose Advice Really Works?” interactive session from CHI 2007, from related workshops Richard has led within various companies, and from a multi-session “User Experience Managers and Executives Speak” course Richard will be offering in Silicon Valley next spring.

<full-description>After speaking at the UPA annual conference in June, one of the attendees asked if I could do a redux for her colleagues over lunch. I agreed and we are opening it up to anyone else who might be interested.

Time: Wed, September 19, 12 noon - 1:30 pm, Central Time (90 minutes)

Place: Gatherplace.com. There are only 20 slots available for the call (2 have already confirmed, so that leaves 18 slots open). If you are interested, please email me: yvonne dot shek at nform dot ca and I will send you the call-in details.

Synopsis:
This talk is aimed at UX professionals who feel that their practice needs to go further, to deliver greater value and impact. To address this need, I will talk about coaching as a mindset and practice, drawing from the field of professional coaching. We will see how valued coaches sell usability, deliver value, and apply usability techniques. Part of this 90-minute presentation will be a case study featuring my clients from LearnAlberta.

<full-description>From microwaves to magazines, T-shirts to travel planning, the average company focuses on offline concerns ahead of online ones. As a result, many web managers find themselves explaining their projects in addition to doing them. A decade after the commercialization of the Internet, working online in an offline world still requires education, patience, and evangelism. How can we accomplish this more quickly, efficiently, and effectively to benefit our work?

What We’ll Cover
Thinking strategically and practically, we will explore some of the reasons offline professionals have trouble relating to Internet initiatives. We’ll deconstruct why an online team has an outsider, or renegade, feel, and discuss the methods for imparting wisdom and gaining buy-in. Students will leave with new ideas and solutions for making online concerns an everyday focus of a company.

Poster Session/Holiday Social:
This isn’t a typical conference poster session. You don’t need to get elaborate; just have fun and get creative! Bring your poster on an 11x17 piece of paper and we will mount it for display. You can print a screen shot of something you worked on, perhaps a before-and-after. Or you can draw up an idea or a unique process that you use in your work. Again, we are not looking for elaborate polished posters, just something simple to demonstrate an idea. All posters will be on display throughout the night while everyone has the opportunity to meet and network with other local UX professionals. If interested, each poster author will be given the floor for a couple of minutes to explain their poster. If you prefer not to participate by bringing a poster, you’re definitely welcome to participate as an audience member and participate in the socializing and networking.

This will be an intimate gathering that offers everybody the chance to present fresh and creative work, ideas or concepts in an informal and fun setting. We invite everyone to come out and share your expertise and get inspired by your colleagues.

Everyone who attends will gain entry into a raffle for a door prize that you won’t want to miss! People who bring posters will be given three raffle tickets, so be sure to bring a poster to have triple the chance of winning.

Note: This is the NH UX version of Pecha Kucha, originally created by Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo. Learn more about Pecha Kucha.

RSVP:
You must RSVP to attend, as we need a head count for the venue. Send RSVPs to newhampshire.ux@gmail.com. You will receive an email confirmation once your name has been added to the list of attendees.

Topic:

What Makes a Design Seem Intuitive?

Everyone wants an "intuitive" interface: the users, the designers, and the content publishers. But building them is hard. User Interface Engineering's recent research has given insight into why it's hard and how to get past major obstacles.

To build an "intuitive" interface, a designer has to do two things: (1) Take complete advantage of what the user already knows, so what they see is completely familiar to them and (2) make the act of learning anything new completely imperceptible to the user. It turns out, if the interface requires the user to realize they are learning something, the "intuitive" label disappears instantly.

In this talk, Jared will show:
+ How users need both tool knowledge and domain knowledge to complete their tasks
+ How simple problems with designs can cause big problems for users
+ What successful teams are doing to create experiences that delight

Jared will show examples from Microsoft Word, MSN, Google Talk, Flickr, Avis, and many more.

Abstract:
What is design thinking? Why is it important? What does design thinking mean to the field of user centered design?

This talk is an overview of how design thinking is finding its place in companies worldwide, and how user-centered design is being applied across many fields, from organizational design to product design.

About Sarah Bloomer:
Sarah Bloomer has designed user interfaces for 20 years. In 1991 she co-founded the interaction design company The Hiser Group. With Hiser, she helped establish the field of user-centered design in Australia. Upon returning to the USA in 2002, Sarah was a senior interaction designer for The MathWorks before starting Sarah Bloomer & Co, a consulting practice focusing on collaborative design facilitation.

Sarah has delivered papers, tutorials and workshops at user interface design conferences in Australia and the USA. Her tutorial, Successful Strategies for Selling Usability into Organizations, became a CHI classic. Sarah also led the conceptualization and development of The Hiser Element™ toolkit, a user-centered design methodology created to help companies rapidly set up usability teams.

Sarah holds an MS from New York University in interactive software design, a BA from Smith College, and served as masters supervisor at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

<full-description>In this one-day workshop, Patrick Kennedy will present the fundamentals of information architecture (IA), the core methodology for organising and designing websites and intranets.

Key skills such as card sorting will be taught, and this workshop is designed to build in-house information architecture skills. A must for all web or intranet teams.

IA provides a rich toolbox of techniques and frameworks to ensure that websites and intranets are structured in a way that makes sense to users.

At the end of the day you will be ready to tackle the information architecture, navigation and page layouts for a small to medium site or part of a larger site.

*Who is this workshop for?*

When redesigning (or designing) a website or intranet, it is critical that users be able to easily find what they want on the new site. This does not happen by chance. Best practice information architecture techniques should be followed to ensure that the desired project outcomes are actually achieved.

IA should therefore be core knowledge for all web and intranet teams. This workshop provides the foundation for building these skills in-house within organisations. It also provides the knowledge required to better manage consultants or contractors who have been engaged to conduct this work on the site.

Please note, this is a introductory workshop designed to build core skills, and is not suitable for intermediate or experienced practitioners.

<full-description>The IA Summit is the premier gathering place for those interested in information architecture. The 2007 Summit attracted over 570 attendees with varying degrees of IA experience and from many related fields. Attendees of the summit are passionate about information architecture and user experience and many are actively involved in the community and the summit itself – over 230 of the attendees provided feedback about the event with 93% indicating that they would attend the summit again and 95% indicating they would recommend the summit to a colleague.

The 2008 theme of “Experiencing Information” shifts the focus back to users. A user experience exists only to allow people to “do things” (in the broadest sense ... buying books, sharing photos with friends, looking something up on wikipedia, etc).

What dimensions of information do users typically experience while “doing things”, and how can we design information environments that best support these users and activities? Such dimensions might include:

- Information quantity and the experience of choice (e.g. Barry Schwartz – The Paradox of Choice);
- The timing of information encounters and information use (e.g. Jared Spool – “seducible moments”);
- The subconscious consumption of information (e.g. BJ Fogg – Persuasive Technology);
- Rapid or intuitive processing of information (e.g. Malcolm Gladwell – Blink);
- The social and participatory aspects of information and information communities (e.g. David Weinberger’s work);
- The wide range of information media: the Web, virtual worlds, ubiquitous computing, mobile technology, physical spaces (e.g. Joshua Prince-Ramus’ and Michael Bierut’s work)

<full-description> There is no single methodology for creating the perfect product—but you can increase your odds. One of the best ways is to understand users' reasons for doing things. Mental Models gives you the tools to help you grasp, and design for, those reasons.

Those in the field of cognitive research have been describing and defining mental models for a few decades. Mental models are the most effective way to align design strategy with your users' behavior, and to approach your design from the understanding of the end user. Mental models are representations of people's behavior, philosophies, and emotion around how they accomplish something, regardless of which tools they use.

In this full-day workshop, Indi Young, author of Mental Models: Aligning Design Strategy with Human Behavior, will teach you how to better understand the user experience through the use of mental models before making design and strategic decisions. Mental models provide design teams with a very clear picture of what their users are trying to accomplish, so the product or design can be structured accordingly.
Who?

Indi Young is an applications and navigation guru who began her work in Web applications in 1995. She specializes in gathering user research data to create mental models for use in business/user gap analysis. A founding partner of Adaptive Path in 2001, she has worked with an impressive collection of clients. Indi recently finished writing her long-awaited book, Mental Models: Aligning Design Strategy with Human Behavior published by Rosenfeld Media.

How much?
The workshop costs £395 per person but Early bird tickets are available until May 7th for £345 per person.

Throughout the electronic age, people have become accustomed to interacting with digital media indirectly, mediated through screens and peripheral devices. But now, as digital technology becomes invisibly embedded in everyday things, the “feeling” of everyday things is also increasingly becoming embedded in digital technology.

In many senses, physical objects are becoming more important. In an immediate way, they can help us define new systems of relationships with digital information. Luke Williams, Creative Director at frog design, examines how perceptions and gestures formed through our experiences with physical products can effectively bring liberty to the relationship between brain, body, and digital media interface.

<full-description>The Games industry has created a whole series of challenges for games developers and designers. Games narratives, structures and controls have got to a level of complexity that offers new ground for inventing and developing different methods of interacting with games.

To be successful, in such a crowded and competitive industry, games developers must consider the context of experience.

Unlike traditional software, where more traditional performance metrics can be applied, measuring experiential dimensions such as 'fun' and 'playability' becomes a daunting task. Games are a tremendously varied set of applications, defying a one-size-fits-all approach. Even a broad and relevant concept such as flow falls short of capturing all classes of game experience.

'Play' will go beyond simple usability issues exploring different dimensions of User Experience that make games enjoyable.

Use8 events are informal and tend to create an open atmosphere conducive to discussion and networking. A good mix of creative businesses, professionals and students are expected to attend. The event will be held on the 29th of August at the Jurys Inn Hotel - Brighton UK. The event is free to attend but you need to register.</full-description>

Summary:
Usability professionals are uniquely positioned to take advantage of the radical changes occurring in the marketplace for technology products and services. The competitive advantage in this sector is slowly shifting from one defined exclusively by engineering, to that of simplicity, usability and the total customer experience. What are the implications of such a shift for our profession?

To compete and thrive in the constantly evolving high-tech sector, professionals working in this sector must also evolve. Based on market and hiring data, Dr. Gribbon's presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities we face today and how we must prepare ourselves to take full advantage of these opportunities. He will highlight how the emergence of the experience economy has opened exciting opportunities in new sectors such as healthcare, financial services, e-business, gaming, and consumer electronics.

Professor Gribbons is Director of the Human Factors and Information Design programs at Bentley, where he teaches courses in human factors and information design on the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Information Design Programs at Bentley are among the largest and most respected programs of this type in the country. Bill was also founder of the Design and Usability Center. Over the past twenty-five years, he has consulted with hundreds of companies around the globe on issues related to product design, usability, and the user experience as business strategy.

Summary:
The usability of sign-up forms is a bugbear of any interface design professional. But what if the real hurdle wasn't usability, but motivation? Josh will show you techniques to motivate people to sign up for your web application, from leveraging social influence to getting rid of the sign up form completely!

Joshua Porter is the founder of Bokardo Design, an interface design and strategy shop focusing exclusively on social web applications. He recently wrote the book "Designing for the Social Web". When he is not designing web sites, Josh is speaking about it at conferences or writing about it at bokardo.com. He lets off steam by rock climbing and keeping up with his two-year old.

About the Presentation
The presentation will provide attendees with an introduction to the UX Health Check approach and its use as a tool for collaborative UX strategy and management.

The UX Health Check allows IA/UX professionals and their collaborators to introduce metrics of success and benchmarks to their product and service design decision-making, from the most strategic to the most tactical aspects.

Measures of success that qualify and quantify user experience efforts are scarce and not widely adopted. The UX Health Check approach introduces a common language to measure how direct investments in improving the user experience result in concrete outcomes.

About the Presenter
Livia Labate is Principal of Information Architecture and User Experience for Comcast Interactive Media where she designs media services across platforms. Livia is also part of the Board of Directors of the Information Architecture Institute, where she volunteers her time to help develop the practice and support IA practitioners.

Time: 6:00PM - 8:00PM
Location: TBD
RSVP: phillychi@gmail.com

About the Presentation
In a series of thought-provoking 10 minute presentations from different members of our team, we’ll share practical ideas that have arisen directly out of a few recent projects.

We’ll touch upon the relationship between user experience thinking and several of our standard project phases, outlined here:
	•	Sales & Client Relations: Robert Jolly will explain how to quickly understand the client’s needs during the sales process, and identify possible approaches to solving business and design challenges.
	•	Project Management: Dave DeRuchie will demonstrate how maintaining flexibility in web project management is the only way to manage the fluid nature of requirements.
	•	Project Definition: Kevin Hoffman will talk about building kickoff meetings for maximum energy and information transfer.
	•	Visual Design: Chris Cashdollar will explore what happens when you lead a project with visual thinking, and how that impacts the UX phase.
	•	Development: Jenn Lukas will review the biggest uh-oh moments and often overlooked concepts out of information architecture and design that impact CMS planning, and Mark Huot will draw a straight line between critical decisions points during strategy, UX, design, and their impact on content management systems and back end implementation.

Whether you’re an independent, part of an internal team, or at an agency, this should be of use to anyone looking to close communication gaps in their process and answer the question “can’t we all just get along?” with a resounding “Yes!”

    <full-description>DESCRIPTION

As mobile applications, or "apps", proliferate in App Stores everywhere, most people focus directly on the app itself. But let's take a step back and look at the environments in which these apps live. How do we effectively design a service that offers not just apps, but SMS, mobile web, HTML5, and desktop integration? And can such environments exist on other platforms besides the iPhone?

Join us for an evening with Leland Rechis of Twitter, as he tells us what mobile services have to offer, what other operating systems offer, and how to tie them together to deliver great experiences for a wide range of users.

Join us for a great discussion on mobile user experience - meaning, come prepared with questions!

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Leland Rechis has designed mobile experiences for many mobile services, including Google Search, Android Market, and most recently, Twitter. In addition to the Android Market, Leland led the design of key services core to the openness of the Android operating system, including the Web Browser, Input Methods, and Application management and security.

<full-description>Design for Conversion is unique in that it offers a platform for bridging the gap between the three attending disciplines that are crucial to successful conversion on the web; online marketing, analytics and user experience design - also referred to as “the conversion family”.

Design for Conversion is not for the faint at heart as there is no escaping the interactive nature of the format. You will have to be willing to burn and learn. The interaction takes place in a special exchange with the international key note speakers. Besides being experts in their field, just as importantly, the speakers become actively involved in the participants’ team challenges. This expectation to get involved may not be for everybody, but one thing’s for sure boring it is not!

Why the Mobile Edition:
Addressing the need to drive conversion through portable devices is unavoidable in this day and age. Consumers increasingly expect access to quality services irrespective of where they happen to be. Not long ago something always seemed to be missing from the business equation, be it infrastructure, standards, devices, applications or business models. That was then, this is now: companies who continue to ignore the opportunities targeting consumer behaviour and driving conversion through portable devices will be missing out big time!

For this special Mobile Edition, the Design for Conversion team has yet again managed to interest a star cast of speakers. With pride they present:

Priya Prakash – Creative Director for Consumer Experience, Nokia

Eric Siegel – President, Prediction Impact Inc.

Scott Weiss – Symbian Foundation, Chair of UI Council

Jerome Nadel - Senior Vice President of User Experience at Sagem Wireless

Do you struggle with processes that feel rote instead of practical? How important is innovation to you and your company? And most importantly, when was the last time you had any fun?

Now…think about animals for a second. What characteristic do humans and animals share?

The answer may surprise you: humans and animals both possess the ability to play games. But unlike most wild animals who shed their play stage early, we have the ability to continue learning through game play throughout our adult lives. Sadly, that doesn't mean we do it.</full-description>

<full-description>But do these deliverables solve business problems? Jeff Gothelf, User Experience Director at TheLadders.com, says no. While each artifact provides documentation and a tangible work product to stakeholders, too much focus on their perfection has caused us to be measured and compensated by the quality of our documentation instead of by the success of the experiences we design.

Enter Lean UX. Inspired by the Agile methodology, Lean UX is the practice of bringing the true nature of our work to light, faster. In this talk, Jeff will explain the iterative strategy and team communication model that characterizes Lean UX, where documentation is not discounted but instead transformed into a practical and usable tool. Jeff will also explain how to introduce Lean UX to your team, whether you’re in a large corporation or an interactive agency.

ABOUT JEFF

Jeff Gothelf is a user experience designer based in metro NYC. He has spent his career designing engaging experiences for clients big and small. He is currently the Director of User Experience at TheLadders.com where he helps executive jobseekers and recruiters make meaningful connections with each other. Previously Jeff helped shape the designs of AOL, Webtrends and Fidelity. Jeff publishes his thoughts on his blog (www.jeffgothelf.com/blog) and on Twitter (www.twitter.com/jboogie).

ABOUT OUR HOST

LBi is a new breed of agency with the strategic, creative, media and technology chops to make brands desirable wherever, whenever and however people choose to engage with them. We base our full-service claim on our heritage, which lies in the early pioneering years of digital communications. Lost Boys, IconMediaLab, Framfab, Oyster, Wheel, Syrup and Special Ops in New York, and lately, Bigmouthmedia, have all brought their own areas of expertise from creativity to consulting and media. The result is a vertically integrated digital agency with innovation at its heart. Our New York office User Experience department focuses on strategic solutions for everything from intranets to websites to mobile devices; the whole digital ecosystem is our focus.

<full-description>User Centric, Inc. invites researchers and industry professionals to join forces and share today’s most successful customer experience transformations at the fourth bi-annual UX Masterclass on September 15 and 16, at The Field Museum, Chicago.

User Centric, a user experience research and design firm based in Chicago, and the UXalliance, a partnership of user experience firms from 23 countries, bring together accomplished UX professionals and user experience enthusiasts at the two-day event. The UX Masterclass will allow attendees to tap into trending topics in healthcare, mobile, design and eye tracking led by global experts in these fields.

“User Centric is excited to bring the conference to Chicago this year, because attendees will learn so much. What we do, user research and design, isn’t just about a product—it’s about the entire experience. Sometimes the change we affect is revolutionary but more often the small differences matter. Either way, we should recognize that what we do matters.” said Gavin Lew, User Centric Managing Director.

With three successful global conferences held in New Zealand, Canada and Denmark in the last 18 months, this event will appeal to user experience enthusiasts who understand that great experiences lead to customer loyalty. The most recent UX Masterclass in Copenhagen, held on April 1 of this year, gave over 200 attendees an opportunity to learn first-hand from 40 leading experts.

“This conference is more than moving from presentation to presentation. We want to make sure that attendees have the opportunity to share and debate practices and trends. We will have workshops and plenty of interaction allowing attendees to exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world,” said UXalliance Marketing Coordinator Aimee Reif.

    <full-description>Day One - Strategy

Great design reflects business strategy and vice versa. Principles of strategy may not change, but the practice is constantly evolving. Whether you're working on grand strategy for your product or want a better understanding of the forces shaping your work, this workshop dives into the design & strategy dynamic with new thinking, examples from our experience and hands-on exercises.

Day Two - Research

You need to make design research count. Valuable research collects information and turns that into knowledge and wisdom about what to do next, but it's often an activity that fails to get the necessary attention and investment. Through examples, a bit of theory and hands-on exercises we'll show you how to get the most for your money, manage your stakeholders and give your designs the concrete direction needed to deliver great experiences.

Day Three - Interaction Design

It takes more than customer insights and a solid product strategy touccessfully deliver on your customer's expectations. The challenge of transforming research insight and business goals into meaningful and tangible outcomes remains as the primary goal the Interaction Designer. In this session, you'll learn to quickly move from abstract insight, to sketching, prototyping and beyond.

Day Four - Digital Service Design

Successful product and service experiences are those that have been orchestrated in a way that best considers the changing needs of people, along with the efforts of the organizations that serve them. This day brings together the essentials of modern multi-channel information architecture with the emerging practices of services design. You'll take away tools of modeling and analysis that shape smart and systemic solutions.</full-description>

"Affordances Demystified"
In interaction design, the word “affordance” is often used to describe something that helps, aids or makes it possible for a user to do something. But what are the different types of affordances? And how should we factor them into our daily HCI/ UX design activities? With several decades in the business, Rex Hartson and Pardha Pyla know a lot about user experience. In fact, this talk is based on a chapter in their recent publication, The UX Book: Process and Guidelines for Ensuring a Quality User Experience. This new book is a comprehensive, practical field guide to understanding, assimilating, and applying the complete interaction design discipline. On April 30th, Rex and Pardha will discuss the different kinds of affordances and how they help in designing for a quality user experience.

Expected audience: Anyone interested in designing interaction between humans and systems or products for a quality user experience.

Takeaway concept: Learn about the different kinds of affordances and how to take them into account in your interaction designs.

<full-description>Start the spring season with an epic bang! Join us for a half-day immersive workshop meant to teach-by-doing the Design Studio method. Whether your focus is strategy, product management, design, or development, this hands-on, dynamic workshop is for anyone involved in the ideation, design or development of websites, applications, and mobile experience.

The early stages of product innovation can crucially influence the success and direction of any product. Yet these stages tend to be fuzzy, highly politicized, and under-documented. This workshop is an introduction to how teams can use The Design Studio method to explore opportunities and innovate products in a more transparent manner so that cross-functional teams focus on how ideas and solutions map back to the problem space and goals, revealing tacit requirements, while mitigating the risk of hidden agendas.

Design Studio is conducted in a highly interactive, fast-paced team setting following a methodology commonly used in architecture and industrial design, but with some important twists. It has been called the “Iron Chef,” of ideation. It can be intense, focused, and chaotic at times, but those lucky enough to have participated understand the power and effectiveness of this tool.

This workshop will teach the fundamentals of running a design studio and will answer questions about how to effectively use Design Studio (as well as variations on it), and to avoid potential pitfalls so those practicing some flavor of Agile UX will be better armed to solve difficult problems in their work.

The workshop guides participations through this evolution in experience ideation using a case study approach to solve a unique problem space, the goal of which is to arrive at some solid design solutions while also learn the hands-on techniques so that attendees may return to their organization and conduct their own design studios.

Cost for the event is $195, which covers the registration, materials, and refreshments.
