SPEAKERS

Jeffrey Zeldman is the founder and executive creative director of Happy Cog, whose clients include AIGA, Advertising Age, and Amnesty International USA. He publishes A List Apart for people who make websites, and has written many articles and two books, notably Designing With Web Standards, 2nd Edition. In 1998, he co-founded The Web Standards Project, a grassroots coalition that persuaded Netscape and Microsoft to support the same technologies in their browsers.

Eric Meyer is the best-selling CSS author and best-recognized CSS authority in the world. His seven books have been translated into six languages; his clients include America On-Line, Apple Computer, Sandia National Laboratory, Wells Fargo Bank, and Macromedia, who described Eric as "a critical partner in our efforts to transform Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 into a revolutionary tool for CSS-based design."

Molly E. Holzschlag is a well-known web standards advocate, instructor, and author. She is Group Lead for The Web Standards Project and an invited expert to the HTML and GEO working groups at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Among her thirty-plus books is the The Zen of CSS Design, co-authored with Dave Shea. The book artfully showcases interesting and instructive csszengarden.com designs.

Happy Cog creative director Jason Santa Maria has been recognized for designing stylistic and imaginative web interfaces that maintain a balance of usability and effective content presentation. His work has won dozens of awards, including seven Addys in 2004. He is also well known for his award-winning personal site, jasonsantamaria.com, where he frequently discusses design and its benefits.</full-description>

We currently have 2 presentations for the evening:

First, our good pal Josh Sager will be making a presentation titled "Rapid Design Techniques in Fireworks that make PhotoShop Jealous". Rapidly create mock ups for web content with Fireworks CS3. Learn time saving tips for organizing multi version designs, reusable layout elements, generating web prototypes with only a few clicks, and easy integration with Adobe Flex.

Next, Val Head and Joe Kromer will be making a dual presentation on two new web technologies: “Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight. What are they and why should you care?”.

Joe and Val’s presentation will give you an overview of what each of these technologies are and talk about what impacts they’ve had on our industry so far. Then they will discuss their opinions — and hopefully some of yours as well — as to how these might impact you and your work in the near future.

Also, now that it’s nice and cool, we don’t expect to need nearly as many fans as we had at the last meeting! In fact, I’ll be providing some tasty hot coffee this time!</full-description>

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

In this presentation, Dennis will share some of his adventures using anthropological tools to inform Information Architecture including some fascinating insights uncovered from raiding people's glove boxes, which directly drove the experience design of the Ford vehicles owners' website. The presentation will help attendees begin to look at Web Design through an anthropological lens, shedding new light on old design problems.

Dennis will also discuss some of the cutting edge ideas and methodologies recently presented at the EPIC2007, the premier international event for practitioners of ethnographic work in industry (not academic). In addition, he will speculate as to what might be some near-term trends we all should take note of.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Mr. Schleicher is a Senior Information Architect at E.magination.com in Baltimore Maryland. He has a background in business and industrial anthropology and has been working awhile in the field of information technology and culture. He later moved into Information Architecture and found, to his surprise, that many anthropological tools and skills were very useful to IA and Web design.

<full-description>Our next meeting will at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 26 at the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue.

Cynthia Closky from Big Big Design will be presenting "Google-Friendly Blogging in Five Easy Steps." She'll be discussing basic search engine optimization for WordPress -- and by extension, other blog tools. There are lots of misconceptions about SEO in the first place, and there are some simple steps one can take to improve one's search ranking.

Next, Jeff Hunter, organizer of Devhouse Pittsburgh will be presenting introduction to Ruby. Jeff will show us what it is, why you may want to consider using it for your next project. When I asked Jeff if was interesting in presenting, I asked him to explain "What the heck is ruby and why do I keep hearing about it (and why do people yell at me when I confuse ruby and ruby on rails?!?)" So you can expect to get answers to those questions too!

Our friends at O' Reilly Publishing have provided us with a few Ruby books as giveaways for the night as well.

Finally, if anyone would like to show off a recent project or pose a few questions to our group, please drop me line!

As usual, we should have a good supply of coffee and cookies and other sweets to get you through the night. Depending out what time we wrap up, we can try to take the conversation down to Affagoto's.
RSVP

Please RSVP to let us know if you will be joining us. I need to make sure we have enough seats and most importantly, coffee! And by all means, please forward this invitation to anyone you like.</full-description>

    <full-description>Instructor Luke Wroblewski
LukeW is currently Senior Principal of Product Ideation & Design at Yahoo! Inc., and Principal of LukeW Interface Designs. Luke authored the book “Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability” and his online publication, Functioning Form, is an industry-leading resource for design intelligence. Luke taught interface design at the University of Illinois and is a top-rated speaker at conferences around the world.

Online forms are the critical bridge between your website or online application and customers actually purchasing from or making connections with you. Seemingly small differences in form design and layout can result in a customer completing their transaction — or abandoning it entirely. This can have an impact of thousands or even millions of dollars. Capitalizing on these opportunities requires an understanding of advanced concepts and experience with key details.

Students will take a deep, in-depth look at online forms as a specific aspect of web design, focusing on the impact of information, interaction and visual design in a variety of different online forms. As a student, you will participate in discussions and hands-on activities that illustrate the concepts, while giving you the chance to exercise the skills so your company’s web form design will successfully facilitate users taking the action you want.

As with all Involution Master Academy courses, this class is limited to nine students. This guarantees each student significant interaction with Luke and a unique opportunity to roll up your sleeves and put these ideas into practice with the recognized industry expert on this topic and your eight classmates. It also means that there are very few seats available, so sign up today!</full-description>

<full-description>In this one-day workshop, Patrick Kennedy will present the fundamentals of information architecture (IA), the core methodology for organising and designing websites and intranets.

Key skills such as card sorting will be taught, and this workshop is designed to build in-house information architecture skills. A must for all web or intranet teams.

IA provides a rich toolbox of techniques and frameworks to ensure that websites and intranets are structured in a way that makes sense to users.

At the end of the day you will be ready to tackle the information architecture, navigation and page layouts for a small to medium site or part of a larger site.

*Who is this workshop for?*

When redesigning (or designing) a website or intranet, it is critical that users be able to easily find what they want on the new site. This does not happen by chance. Best practice information architecture techniques should be followed to ensure that the desired project outcomes are actually achieved.

IA should therefore be core knowledge for all web and intranet teams. This workshop provides the foundation for building these skills in-house within organisations. It also provides the knowledge required to better manage consultants or contractors who have been engaged to conduct this work on the site.

Please note, this is a introductory workshop designed to build core skills, and is not suitable for intermediate or experienced practitioners.

<full-description>If you are involved in managing, developing, or writing for websites, you won't want to miss this opportunity to spend two engaging and educational days with one of the world's leading experts on web content and usability.

Gerry McGovern, is making a repeat visit to Ottawa, after his sold-out presentation last November, to give an encore Masterclass on creating customer-centric websites. Organizations whose websites focus on the customer and on task completion, rather than on themselves, are the ones getting the most from their Web content, whether it's selling products or delivering services.

This two-day Masterclass will provide you with the knowledge and tools needed to create quality "killer Web content" and the arguments to support an approach that puts the customer at the very centre of your Web strategy.

You should attend this workshop if you are:
- Writing, editing or publishing Web content
- Managing Web projects
- Promoting websites
- Concerned about Web usability

The Masterclass is being hosted by Neo Insight Inc., in collaboration with the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI).

Don't let others miss out on this opportunity. Please forward this announcement to friends and colleagues (distribution lists too) who have a stake in good Web design.

We have several people who have attended previous Gerry McGovern workshops and were so impressed that they have registered again for this Masterclass. Come join us!

<full-description>This Executive session is for senior managers and executives who have to translate strategic plans and visions into coordinated actions by other people. It is for those of you who want to:

- Take your vision and manage your website to realize your strategic objectives
- Make decisions based on data rather than opinion
- Establish a clear return on investment
- Maintain a clear focus to get maximum impact from limited resources
- Develop actionable metrics for effectively managing the web channel

The key challenge you face today with your website is not about technology or content. It’s about service. How do you let your customers (citizens, consumers and businesses) more quickly and more easily serve themselves? Because on the Web it’s all about self-service.

The Web is about the shift in power from the organization to the customer. Simply put, the Web empowers customers and citizens more than it empowers organizations. The most successful websites are built around the needs of its users, rather than the demands of organizations and managers. In the long-term, being customer-centric is not a like-to-do, it is a must-do.

Gerry McGovern is world-renowned speaker and expert on Web content and usability. He communicates the essential strategies that every manager needs to know, in an engaging and humorous way that makes his message unforgettable. Do not miss this one-off opportunity

<full-description>Online forms are the critical bridge between your website or online application and customers actually purchasing from or making connections with you.

Instructor Luke Wroblewski
LukeW is currently Senior Principal of Product Ideation & Design at Yahoo! Inc., and Principal of LukeW Interface Designs. Luke authored the book “Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability” and his online publication, Functioning Form, is an industry-leading resource for design intelligence. Luke taught interface design at the University of Illinois and is a top-rated speaker at conferences around the world.

<full-description>Nathan Swartz of clicknathan and is one of those freelance web designer-types living and breathing in Pittsburgh, PA. When not indenting <p> tags or cursing IE6, he likes long walks through the city with his son and wife or enjoying summer afternoons at the Harris Grill in Shadyside. Nathan will be sharing some of the lesson’s he’s learned from being a full-time freelancer in “How to Work from Your Underwear: Some Freelancing Tips for Web Designers“.

Jonathan Brodsky graduated from CMU in 2005 with a degree in design. He spends his days working on web development, & nights as a musician and artist. Jon will be showing tools for programmers to improvise live music & visuals using text editors & code as their instruments. This practice, generally referred to as “livecoding”, is about exposing the audience to the mechanics of a computer based performance. He’ll also give a demo of a livecoding tool that he is developing in javascript and openGL.

Finally, Geoff Barnes is currently the Senior Information Architect at Elliance, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based e-marketing agency. Geoff has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago & an MFA from the University of Oregon. Geoff came to Pittsburgh in 2001 to help create the Media Arts BFA at Robert Morris University, where he served as a full-time faculty member until 2005.

Geoff will present “What Purpose IA?”. What is the purpose of a marketing website? While marketing websites are more application-inclusive than ever, the fundamental marketing task of persuasion is still the purpose nexus of any marketing-driven website. The site’s IA needs to go beyond content organization, and embody the persuasive goals driving the project. The difference between creating systematic order and creating a systematically ordered, compelling argument is often the difference between a me-too site and a persuasion machine. Learn how to protect your client’s marketing objectives with purpose-driven discovery and IA.</full-description>

<full-description>Designing social websites and applications or adding a social dimension to an existing project entails its own unique challenges way beyond those involved in creating experiences for individuals interacting alone with an interface. Any of the following sound familiar?

* I’m a designer being asked to add “social” to my site!
* I have an active community on my site but people are misbehaving. How can I get that under control?
* We want to build a really cool social experience around [thingy] but we’re not sure how to get people to come join the fun.
* I have a great idea for a social utility but I don’t want to have to first re-create the social infrastructure of the web inside of it.
* People come and read my content, but they’re invisible to each other. How can I peel away the layers so they can participate with each other?
* I’m worried I’m missing an opportunity to help my members connect with each other in the real world.

In this full-day workshop, we’ll address these challenges and more. You’ll explore the landscape of social user experience design patterns and anti-patterns, focusing on the contexts in which specific interface designs work well and the unintended consequences that make some UI ideas seem like a good idea until they turn around and bite you in your app.

Starting with a foundational set of high-level practices that underpin the individual interaction, Christian will present rules and tips for how to mix-and-match the individual social patterns and best practices to create compelling social experiences. Workshop activities will involve concept modeling and user interface sketching to explore the application of social interaction patterns to specific scenarios.</full-description>

<full-description>Developing curricula and training for the next generation of web designers and developers often feels like shooting at a moving target. Best practices are constantly evolving, and difficult to keep track of, while standards seem to constantly emerge and be updated. Browsers upgrade at a seemingly furious pace. As a consequence, it’s a real challenge for education and training to prepare students for the needs of industry by equipping them with the proper foundational knowledge of current best practices and standards.

Ed Directions, a highly focussed, in-depth, whole day symposium, will address this challenge, by helping teachers, trainers, course and curriculum developers, and others in the education field keep abreast with the latest developments in standards and industry best practice, and to develop and deliver the best possible curricula and courses.

The day will be divided into 4 sessions:

* Session 1: HTML semantic markup and web content technologies
* Session 2: Cascading style sheets and web presentation
* Session 3: JavaScript and Ajax
* Session 4: Accessibility and usability

with each session featuring:

* a renowned domain expert giving an overview of current best practice, standards, as well as commonly used and taught, but outmoded, technologies and techniques
* experts in the education sector, covering the resources available (commercial, free, and open) to develop curricula and training courses
* experienced teachers and trainers with a track record of success in developing and delivering training in this area, sharing their real world experience
* interactive sessions to put these all this knowledge into practice, and share experiences with professionals facing the same challenges as you</full-description>

<full-description>Knowing your customer, understanding their needs and how they interact with your web site and company is important. We all know that. However budgets, expertise and time are not always on your side. Applying research to your process is like working out. Always important, nice to do when you have time but often slips off the radar. In this full-day workshop, design ethnographer Kelly Goto takes you into the real world of design research. Kelly will take you at a rapid yet accessible pace through in-depth case studies, lectures and hands-on assignments showing you new methods of understanding your audience’s behavior, not just following stats.

Create your own research toolkit and test plan, learn the pros and cons of remote testing, understand when to use smaller sample sizes for usability testing and in-depth interviews and how often to iterate during your development process. Preview various tools that allow for faster iteration at a lower cost and learn the best ways of integrating fast-turn research into a modified agile process. Whether you are a designer, coder, manager or research specialist, this workshop will supply you with tools, tips and techniques you can immediately apply.

In this session, you will learn

* how to create a realistic, iterative research plan
* what methods to incorporate into your customized toolkit
* cost-effective remote and in-person usability testing
* best methods for rapid prototyping & testing
* segmenting audience by behavior, not demographics
* combining ‘qual’ and ‘quan’ for best results</full-description>

<full-description>Ever wondered how top flight designers organize their workflow, from the original client brief, through to execution in code?

In this workshop, celebrated designer Elliot J. Stocks takes you behind the scenes of the design process, from the initial stages of briefing and research through to final comps delivered to the client for sign-off, ready to be marked-up. The final part of the workshop concentrates on the best ways to prepare your designs for markup and CSS: from sensibly organising your Photoshop layers through to cutting up images with CSS techniques in mind.

What will be covered?

* Research (the brief, inspiration, sketching)
* Structure (information architecture, wireframing)
* Interaction (navigation, forms, audio & video)
* Aesthetics (layout, colour, typography, imagery, atmosphere)
* Production (design comps, deliverables, style guides, CSS)

Who is this workshop for?

The fact that the workshop focuses primarily on Photoshop-based design might suggest it will be suited to designers who do not code, but a knowledge of HTML / CSS will help considerably. Likewise, front-end developers will find the workshop to be a valuable insight into the design process, and novice Photoshop users will be able to expand their skillset based on the techniques discussed.</full-description>

<full-description>Build Your Skills with the Leading Web Design Authors

Web design is undergoing an historic transformation: while the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript haven't changed, the new and evolving functionality in the HTML5 and CSS3 specs, the number of new ways in which people access the Web, and the rise of social media mean that Web designers need to know more than ever. Whether it's a smarter content strategy, a more efficient workflow, or simply how to use drop shadows and an expanded typographic repertoire, you need the tools to build tomorrow's Web today.

Are your design skills up to the challenge? Does your new media savvy match that of your users or competitors? Are your sites ready to be accessed from smartphones and iPads? Even if you think your answer to those questions is yes, what you still need is the Voices That Matter: Web Design Conference, taking place June 28-29, 2010 in San Francisco, CA. Only here will you have the opportunity to meet and learn from the thought leaders in our industry.

This conference brings together respected industry authors and thought-leaders of the Web design revolution. Many of you learned your very first Web design skills from these authors. Now, you can learn from them how changes to the building blocks of the Web—from HTML5 and CSS3 to user interfaces—are enabling designers to create sites that are easy to use, richly functional, packed with interactive features, and easily accessible from any Internet-capable device.

Over the course of two days, these sessions—plus the opportunity to interact and share ideas with fellow designers, teachers, and, yes, authors—will give you the insight and inspiration you need to ensure that your sites are ready for the future.
